Consequence of Sound' s Summer Tour Guide will lead you to the darkest, dankest (not every venue has a ventilation system, folks) concerts where you can dance the night away after spending too many hours in the sun. From Dirty Projectors to Phish to the Diplo/Grimes/Skrillex extravaganza that is the Full Flex Express, we've listed the best and brightest artists that are touring new or as-of-yet unreleased albums , touring around festival appearances, or just touring because it's damn fun. -Harley Brown Associate Editor Feature artwork [...]
In both independent and mainstream music over course of history, certain genres have been almost lead, or progressed, by the particular individuals which inhabit them. Take for example shoegaze, which was developed much further by artists such as My Bloody Valentine or Slowdive, or perhaps post-punk, with early material from Talking Heads, Gang of Fours, Joy Division, and many more. No matter the genre and/or era of that genre, certain forerunners never cease to immediately appear clear to the knowledgable music listener. Undoubtably, one of the pioneers of alternative hip-hop in the early 20002s is none other than [...]
"Yes, I'm paranoid - but am I paranoid enough?" This quote best fits El-P 's Brooklyn, NY state of mind: uneasy about being uneasy, angry about being angry, sick of being sick, paranoid about being paranoid. After over 17 years defining underground hip hop as head of the pioneering Definitive Jux label, one third of Company Flow, production work with Cannibal Ox, and his previous solo records, El-P has reached Peak El-P. The roads in his mind are curling back onto themselves like a mobius strip and more than ever, most of the verses on Cancer [...]
El-P - Cancer For Cure Fat Possum Records: 2012 "I wouldn't want to be a part of any club that would have me," El-P offers on his stellar new album Cancer for Cure . Let's consider this statement for a second. What clubs has been associated with during his storied career? El-P has always been a great team player. From his beats for masterpieces like Cannibal Ox's The Cold Vein (which still ranks as my all-time favorite rap album) to Aesop Rock's Labor Days from his days as head of Def Jux-he has [...]
El-P wowed us with his last Cancer4Cure release "The Full Retard," a swarming, internet-age jam which is easily one of our favorite hip-hop songs of 2012. Now he's offering up single number two, "Tougher Colder Killer," which features his frequent collaborator Killer Mike as well as Despot . El-P and co. serve up yet another truly killer beat that'll take you about twenty listens to really dissect, especially as it's buried under title-appropriate brutal verses from all three. We're seriously repeat rewinding to that moment toward the song's end when [...]
El-P drops a new track from his forthcoming album Cancer For Cure , featuring verses from Killer Mike and Despot. I love the song concept, too. To me, it seems to poke fun at the ongoing race in hip hop to come off tougher than the next guy. C'mon, guys. We all know that race has already been won . But seriously, it's a dimension worth attacking, and El-P does it with both guns blazin'. Despot and Mike come through just as hard, creating a superhero trio of ultra-aggressive rappers that tag team this beat like [...]
"I slapped the motherfucker so hard, his mother just called him and said 'Baby, you OK?' I just got a strange pain in the side of my face". My mate text me this line after hearing Killer Mike deliver it on 'Tougher Colder Killer', one of the awesome tracks from El-P's forthcoming Cancer For Cure that has been let loose on the net prior to the album's release on May 25th. Previously, hear 'The Full Retard' and his newest Bigg Jus collab . Cancer For Cure is a [...]

A couple weeks ago we got the album's first single in "The Full Retard" . Today we have the second piece of new material in "Tougher Colder Killer", which features Killer Mike and Despot. I loved "The Full Retard", and "Tougher Colder Killer" doesn't disappoint. The song is fierce, and I really dig the old school stabs that go down in the second verse. Killer Mike absolutely [...]

I don't have a strong opinion about Das Racist, every so often someting pops up from them that you can't deny the slacker brilliance. I grabbed Heems's recently released mixtape 'Nehru Jackets' on a whim and was pretty impressed. More than a few tracks are built around awesome chopped samples of Indian vocalists paired with some quite decent beats. As well, the mixtape has guest spots from the likes of Danny Brown, Mr. Muthafuckin' eXquire, Das Racist's Kool A.D., Action Bronson, Childish Gambino and Despot. 'Nerhu Jackets' is retty good for a guy who broke onto [...]
Fans of deconstructionist hip-hop mirth-makers Das Racist had to have mixed feelings about the fact that the three collaborators in the mix each promised a solo mixtape this year. On the one hand, duh, more material from these guys is a good sign, but, on the other, fracturing their voices could be problematic. How would Victor " Kool A.D. " Vazquez's spacey, absurdist sense of humor work without Himanshu " Heems " Suri's Dada bravado, and vice versa? When A.D.'s Palm Wine Drinkard mixtape hit, there was even more cause for concern. The whole [...]
