...As someone who organizes and books shows myself, I realize that women are heavily outnumbered by men when it comes to rappers, and that schedules often don't work out or whatever…so this is really symptomatic of a larger problem. This piece examines why that imbalance exists in the first place, and what we can do about it.

Me going nuts when Pharcyde dropped "Raise It Up" in tribute to Jay Dee As you can see by the picture I look like I am in a great mood. That's because I was outstandingly over-joyed all day on Saturday in Shakopee, MN at Soundset 2009. I really couldn't have asked for much more the entire day. My camera died roughly an hour and a half into the show (thanks to Erik for the pictures as well as other people on Flickr) and I ended up looking like a lobster from sunburn, but it [...]
I found this while doing a little YouTube searching for Soundset 2009 footage. I'll continue to post videos when they're of relatively high quality. Feel free to forward videos on to me, too. Particularly if they're of the Fifth Element stage, which I was not able to check out. In this video, a few members of the Doomtree collective get down to "Low Light Low Life," off P.O.S.'s Never Better . The crowd went nuts when Dessa started rapping.
A few of the members of Doomtree recently visited McNally Smith, a college for the performing arts in downtown Saint Paul. In the first clip, Sims and Dessa perform their song, "The Wren," off of the collective's self titled album, Doomtree . The second clip features the crew showing their video for "Drumsticks" to a class, and the speaking on the logistical details of making a music video.

St. Vincent to play First Avenue in June, news on Prince's upcoming releases & Dessa talks "Spiral Bound."
(via ) Though its been POS whose gotten most of the attention lately, it would be the death of hip-hop fans everywhere to underestimate the rest of the estimable Doomtree collective. Poetess Dessa released the MPLS-based nonet's first book, a collection of poetry and essays called Spiral Bound on February 7th; also, rapper Cecil Otter put out his solo album Rebel Yellow last fall. Recently, Otter has signed with label Strange Famous Records , who, in a wider distribution deal, will re-release Yellow . To celebrate, [...]

Heiruspecs just announced their upcoming tour in promotion of Heiruspecs , which cracked my best of albums 2008 list . Here's their press release: Twin Cities legends Heiruspecs are hitting the road again behind their first studio record in four years. After selling out First Avenue for their CD release party Heiruspecs will be hitting those Midwest weekend runs during the spring.
