The word “techno” has certainly taken on its fair share of interpretations in the course of its history. It is undeniably culturally significant not only to devotees of electronic music, but also to understanding the trajectory of the world’s sonic history as we know it. As the new generation of dance music lovers, we owe it to ourselves to understand the place from which we came. When considering techno, the first thing to grasp is just how closely the city of Detroit must be tied to this music’s beginnings and although techno may have rocketed into European sensibilities much more [...]

Releasing "Think About It" as Etat Solide on her own UK House Records in 1990, Kelli Hand became one of the first female producers of house and techno in the world. To avoid the confusion of origin that the label name created, Hand re-titled her imprint Acacia Records after a street in her hometown of Detroit. On Acacia she championed her own early work with Claude Young as Rhythm Foundation, her solo productions as K. Hand, as well as giving talents like Sean Deason and Wamdue Kids a home for their first releases. Continuing to also release on other labels [...]

It all started with Carol Marvin , Pop Culture Media, and the need to expose Detroit's overlooked history of electronic music. Marvin partnered with Dave Cooper and Kurt Martin in 1994 to create The World Party , A Memorial Day weekend festival featuring a long list of artists, some new, some unknown, some of which included Carl Cox , Derrick May , Kevin Saunderson , and Richie Hawtin . Unfortunately, due to poor production set up and sweltering heat, attendance was low, causing The World Party and the city to [...]
Four of the six members of today's featured Detroit based band have fronted other projects, but during the past few years they have united under first-time bandleader, Joe Hertler, to create sublime folk tinged with Motown, funk, and pop. "When we met Joe," says bassist and producer of Hertler’s first album, Kevin Pritchard, "He was a weird dude with sideburns hiding behind an accordion. Now he's a confident front man with a flower on his head and a mic in his hand." Joe Hertler started as a successful solo artist, and then formed a duo with guitarist Ryan [...]

Paxahau’s Jason Huvaere talks techno in advance of Movement festival
One thing is immediately evident when talking techno with Paxahau Event Productions president Jason Huvaere. The music is deeply personal to the man behind Movement Electronic Music Festival . "I felt like I had found what I was searching for without even knowing I was searching for it," Huvaere says of discovering Detroit's underground techno scene in the early 90s. "There was something about the transparency, the randomness, the frequency range, the math, the lack of language, the futuristic feeling, and the kind of no end in sight. You kind of knew right away, there’s [...]

New From Larry Jefferson
Larry Jefferson is from Yorkshire (UK) but makes acid and techno in a classic Detroit or Chicago style. He has a new album out this summer. In advance of that, a couple of splendid free downloads. Larry appeared on my Let's Go Somewhere Quiet compilation. He makes delicate house music that is quite introspective. On the new album, there's little information other than confirmation that it's again coming out on cassette, plus digital. The first track is Taking From Detroit . Larry says this " is my English homage to [...]
