Clive Davis and Whitney Houston in Feb. 2007 - Getty Clive Davis ' annual pre-Grammy party was understandably a somber event as guests were still in shock over the sudden death of one of music's greatest voices, Whitney Houston , just hours before the gala, which she was scheduled to attend, began. It wasn't immediately clear if Davis, who launched Houston's career and remained her mentor throughout the years, was going to attend the party, but he did show up and shared a few heart-wrenching words with attendees before asking for [...]
In case you're wondering, I was lying when I said I was having a wisdom tooth removed by an oral surgeon. In fact, I simply traveled to Spain, where I had the tooth knocked out by a pizza boomerang. Here's some other shit we did this week: We debuted new music by Terrorizer and Seas [...]
Last night I listened to both Axel Rudi Pell's Circle of the Oath and The Devastated's Devil's Messenger for the first time, and I'm honestly not sure which one was is worse. I guess ARP has some humor/entertainment value at least, because it's just SO GODDAMN SILLY, whereas The Devastated's album just made me wanna kill myself; [...]

Coming out March 6th on Constellation , here is a track from the forthcoming Elfin Saddle record, Devastates . It's an edit of the track "the Changing Wind," which I wouldn't have guessed since the music flows so well here. The song opens up with some nice acoustic arpeggios and ominous drones. Once things start to take off, these folky boy-girl vocals come in and give the whole thing a charming and rootsy feel. These root's ain't in America, though! The accordions that fly in sound like they're playing Scottish bagpipe melodies to me. [...]

We won't call out some of the obvious one's in this playlist but we will say this weather channel business is really put the scare in the upper North East. The sheer scale of it has people literally running for the hills to seek higher ground. Anyway this play list goes out to user @daanvanrossum because he asked me what was on my Hurricane playlist and i just told him I daho's You Were A Dick was a good rain record and walked away. That was sort of rude but I told him I'd work on [...]
The line-up for this year's edition of the annual Thrash and Burn tour has been announced, and it's terrible; so terrible that I don't even have any witty way of expressing it's terribleness. So I'm not here to make more jokes at the expense of some deathcore bands; I hope they all have fun on [...]

Shotgun Jimmie - "Bar's Closed" . Dan wrote about "Late Last Year" , from Shotgun Jimmie's Transistor Sister , about two weeks ago. But I am not convinced that everyone in all of the world has yet bought this album, Jimmie's third solo outing, and his first great triumph. Honestly friends, this record is generous and funny and it is possibly ludicrous how much I dig it. "Late Last Year" is the opener and "Bar's Closed" is the closer, and even though this is the record's denouement they do it in two verses and 1 minute 42. Throughout [...]
In the first installment of "OLD BANDS U MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT", I shared a bunch of old bands that I like. Instead of coming up with a new description, I will just reuse the old one: When I am not trolling simple-minded, entry-level elitists, I enjoy the soothing, dulcet tones of some classic thrash [...]

A Cockroach by Grass House
Don't know These Are They? Well, unless you wanna end up in the back of a trunk like the dude above, you should learn who they are right quick. The side project of Novembers Doom's Paul Kuhr, These Are They channel crushing old-school death metal acts like Morbid Angel and Devastation - in fact, they [...]

Antony & Bryce Dessner - I Was Young When I Left Home Eamon sat on the porch of a house he did not live in. He looked out at the road ahead. It was dusty, one-way, leading away from the trees to flatlands that spanned the horizon and sat lonely with the sun sometimes at the end of the day, when it had tired of hanging in the sky lighting the way for the lost. It would fall, swap tales with the land before disappearing to rest. The moon would kick up its heels, hum a [...]
