Photos and words by Debi Del Grande Devendra Banhart kept us guessing at The Fonda on what he would play and how he would play it. With his comrades of mystery (including drummer Fab Moretti of The Strokes and opener Brazilian Rodrigo Amarante), the Latin-infused folk set had couples embracing and drinks flowing. A nice surprise came when drummer Gregory Rogove sat in and Banhart turned and grinned. His latest Mala was brought to the table and and we all stayed for dessert. [...]

Celebrities cameo in music videos all the time. Whether it’s a way for them to launch an image makeover (Megan Fox hoping to be a serious actress in “Love the Way You Lie”) or just an excuse to make out with their significant other (all eyes on Ben Affleck slapping J.Lo’s ass), big stars seem to love lending their famous faces to help videos get more play. Once in a great while, the celebrity cameo goes beyond the usual eye-rolling “look at me” antics and is genuinely hilarious. So, take a load-off and watch some amazing [...]

How about something soothing for a Friday afternoon. A lovely remix of Devandra Banhart giving it a laidback beach house feeling. Free download. The original of the track is a lush acoustic number from Devandra Banhart's recently-released fourth album. The remix is pretty sympathetic to the original but gives it a beach house backing and beats. This leaves something rather beautiful and sped up just enough to dance along to. Fine work by London's Daniele Di Martino. Original here:

Mala, Devendra Banhart Nonesuch Records, USA Rating: 79 by Carlos Reyes The white savior complex is far from being a popular topic of discussion on Latin music forums, but when hipsters get together, it seems like no one is indifferent to the subject. “I am Venezuelan. Do I represent Venezuelans? I don’t know…I can barely represent myself.” Although Devendra Banhart carries Venezuelan blood and lived his formative years in that country, the general perception (at least from those in Latin [...]

Freak-folk’s not dead, and neither is Devendra Banhart . Though he’s been laying low for the last couple of years, he never really left. Nonetheless, a lot has changed since the last time we really heard from Banhart: he’s just released a new record, Mala , on Nonesuch , and more noticeably, he’s traded his trademark tresses for a (slightly) more conventional cut. Currently touring behind Mala , he’ll be at the Regency on the 21st (and for all you South Bay-ers, he’ll be at the Rio in Santa Cruz on the [...]
Our San Diego picks for the week*
When it comes to Devendra Banhart releases, my final overall feeling is always that I quite enjoy them. There are always a bunch of pretty good tracks, a couple ‘odd / don’t quite work / we get it, your a free spirit’ tracks, and then there is one or two total jams that are so total in their jammage that it ups the quality of everything. And his latest release Mala continues that trend. The total jam? This track obviously. It had me vibing with it so instantly and freely that it took a few spins before I [...]
![[Song of the Day] Devendra Banhart – “Never Seen Such Good Things”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4907153_lg.jpg)
Devendra Banhart "Never Seen Such Good Things" I haven't been the biggest fan of Devendra Banhart in the past, but the more I listen to his most recent album, Mala , the more I love it. Not only does it dabble in what seems like half a dozen different genera’s, the album does so while sounding like it accomplished the feat with a laid-back almost effortless vibe. I guess after eight albums a person learns to master those kinds of touches. [...]
