Texas natives Harlem continue to their North American tour by playing tonight at the Green Room in Montreal. I won't be able to make it because of the glory of the United States, 1940-1965 (exams...) but don't follow my lead, go see these guys rip through fun song after fun song from their excellent 2010 album, Hippies. These fellas play a nice brand of garage-ish rock, but it's not particularly fuzzy or lo-fi. Instead their appeal comes from just flat out good songs and the feeling of good times that come with them. Down the street, in a garage, a sonic protuberance is waiting to penetrate your feeble mind. Generally music occupies a wide frequency spectrum; especially fancy major label recordings. Devil Eyes acknowledges the spectrum and declines most of its necessity. Who needs slight cymbal splashes at 21khz? No one. A bastion of fuzz, Devil Eyes compresses and condenses rock and roll to its fundamental quality. Noise. Sounds like shoving popcorn down some poor bastards snorkel. With a few exceptions Montreal is known more for producing arty, ethereal indie rock rather than the raw and raucous.
