Filed under: Around the World Hard not to look at the choice of 'Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood' for the lone cover on 'rivermudtwilight,' the first album by the super-trio Les Triaboliques , as coming with some subtext. After all, "misunderstood" is almost a default setting for these guys, each with histories of doing music that sometimes might have confused and confounded people. Ben Mandelson very purposefully confounded -- and delighted -- many in the guise of Hijaz Mustapha with the high jinks (and high-standards in music) in the [...]
On Devon Sproule's latest music video, there's plenty of heart, laughter, and sunshine in the production value. So much so, that it has become an instant summertime favorite. Just watch it and you'll see what I mean. Sproule made the video during a week of downtime in the UK and the song "Good to Get Out" appears on Sproule latest album Don't Hurry for Heaven. Produced by her husband Paul Curreri , Don't [...]

These three songs have three things in common: the titles, of course, are all questions; the artists all happen to be female; and these are songs that I would have posted over the course of the week, if this had been a normal week. It wasn't. I have been putting the finishing touches on the restoration of Oliver di Place, and my glitches have glitches. But I do have my new file host. In fact, this post is a test of that host, so if anyone has any problem listening to or downloading the tracks, please let me know in [...]
Not only do they share the same title, but they are both lead off tracks. Ani DiFranco ∞ Ain't That The Way Devon Sproule ∞ Ain't That The Way Which song do you dig best? My liver is grateful for the small mercy which is the relatively empty Edinburgh gig calendar this week. Last week was rough. The Song, by Toad party was a heavy one, and then Broken Records the next day was just total carnage, so an easy week of video editing and IKEA furniture assembly will be most welcome. Meursault are embarking on a mini tour of the North of England this weekend as well. I started trying to book them a tour myself, and soon realised that it would need far more time and experience than I myself actually [...]

Ethiopiques Vol. 4 , Ethio Jazz and Musique Instrumentale --- Devon Sproule It's embarrassing being a musician who can't really improvise. No, it ain't nerves, but thanks for asking. Even by myself, or with the right amount of wine, I just can't really do it. My new friend Adrienne Young told me she used to have cold-sweat nightmares where she'd be sitting around with a bunch of dudes -- y'know, [...]

Charlottesville's Devon Sproule kicks off a special six-date East Coast tour tonight in Richmond, VA as part of her new side project Devon Sproule and Her In-Laws. The brief tour run through Virginia, Maryland, Philly, and NYC finds Sproule collaborating with her brother-in-law Matt Curreri, who fronts the San Diego-based band The ExFriends , and Curreri's longtime band mate Ray Suen, who is currently on break from touring as a member of The Killers. The In-Laws Tour culminates with a show at the [...]

Although the whole EOTR experience is wonderful, it's the music that most people are there for. My musical adventures started properly about 9:30pm on the Friday when I popped up to the Bimble Inn to see Devon Sproule play her wistful take on acoustic American folk music. There were songs from her Upstate Song s record, her latest Keep Your Silver Shined , a Neil Young cover and a triumphant ending on current album stand-out Old Virginia Block . A good start to proceedings for me. [...]

I don't have the time to do a proper End of the Road preview (I never thought I would), so this is just a quick signing-off type post. As the very astute of you may have gathered, I'm off to the End of the Road Festival in Dorset next weekend, which if the weather improves a bit, should be brilliant. We'll be on holiday on the south coast for a few days before the festival and heading up to Scotland afterwards, so this will be the last post till at least 23 September, when I'll be back with [...]
It still astounds me that artists whose music I love actually read what I write, let alone follow my advice. I recommended Contrast Podcast to Devon Sproule and Rykarda Parasol , and I'm thrilled to find that they both submitted intros for the latest "Musicians Introduce Their Own Songs" episode: Contrast Podcast - Musicians Introduce Their Own Songs (mp3) -- Please visit Muruch to comment. Muruch is a 100% legal music blog, all mp3s are posted with permission.

My name is Paul and I usually blog over at Setting The Woods On Fire . Boyhowdy has been kind enough to let me say a few words here while he enjoys a vacation. As you might have guessed from the title of my blog, I'm a big fan of Hank Williams . I also love cover songs. Cover songs are fun because they help you separate the song from the performance. Do I love Hank because of the songs he wrote and poularized? Or do I love Hank because of the way he [...]
Over at Star Maker Machine this week we've been tackling state songs; songs, that is, about each of the 50 states of the good ole US of A, as opposed to official state songs. In addition to the posts I made over there, I decided that it would be a good idea to run my own list of all the states...this was perhaps a mistake, because I have just spent about four days scouring my music library, finding songs, making very difficult decisions about what to include and what to cull, and generally... By the time we finally caught pregnant, we had both been teaching for a decade, and that meant the baby name books were right out. After we discarded the archaic and the merely odd, the names that were left were invariably overfamiliar -- we knew "that kid", and thus the name came with baggage we just could not accept. So we took a look at ourselves. Liberal folk, to put it politically, with a sense of adventure, and a love of the world for what it was. We wanted [...]

I love when things come together serendipitously . I had been planning to do Devon Sproule as this week's Wayback Wednesday since last Wednesday. Since then, I have realized her and husband Paul Curreri have released they annual Valentine's Duets . Every year since 2003, Devon and Paul have put out little compilations of cover songs for Valentines Day (FREE TO DOWNLOAD!!!). Also since then, I found out that Devon's 2003 album – Upstate Songs – has [...]
A while back Found Magazine asked musician friends to craft songs out of their finds, debris of notes and letters that people send in. Several songs appeared on their Found 7-inch vinyl release. But my fave is not on disc, nor any longer online. So, here 'tis, Devon Sproule ...
