Music for music's sake. This is the message behind the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival , one of San Francisco's most anticipated musical events of the year. Funded by 77-year-old investment banker and music fanatic Warren Hellman, the event is free for the public and usually boasts around 750,000 people in attendance. This year was no different. With one of the most decorated and diverse lineups in the festival's history, including performances by Robert Plant and the Band of Joy , Bright Eyes , Broken Social Scene , and DeVotchka , this three-day assemblage [...]

Photos by Philip Cosores To generalise, Elbow deals in two types of songs: the anthems and the poignant. While people who love Elbow and go to see Elbow play live may want to hear more of the latter, their live shows consist almost entirely of the former. This could be disappointing for fans who want to see their favourite deep cuts reproduced live, but when you create grandiose music seemingly effortlessly, and glaze it with the honey-like vocals of Guy Garvey, there can be no complaints whatsoever that they decided to stick with the bigger numbers [...]

I'm a hundred miles and running right now so I have no choice but to make this a quick one. Ryan sent me a brand spanking new mixtape over the weekend and talk about perfect timing! My BB won't stop buzzing with emails, I have music to produce, restaurants to curate, DJ sets to finish and all in the before Friday when I fly out to DR to spin at a beach party. Life is going fast right now and I have no intention on slowing up. Anyways, Ryan says this is a pensive tape but for those [...]

The first installment of SoundTown Music Festival in Somerset, WI, had a lot riding on the shoulders of 2,500 attendees. The new management of the former Float-Rite Park Amphitheater tried to revamp the arena's image after years of Ozzfest-induced damage to the grounds and its reputation in the town of Somerset. And what better way to do it than to bring in beloved local bands with a Flaming Lips cherry on top? Granted, it's not quite the same when a 40,000-person amphitheater is about five percent full, but who notices when you're in the front row reaching for [...]

2010 was a year filled with high-profile releases from the likes of Kanye West, LCD Soundsystem, The National and others. By contrast, 2011 has been a year of records flying under the radar. The only records backed by significant hype were GOBLIN , which received attention more for its subject matter than its musical content, and Bon Iver , which wouldn't have received half the pre-release attention it did without Justin Vernon's appearances on the previously referenced Kanye album. Of course, as a consequence of the toned-down hype, it's possible that [...]

The only way to understand Glastonbury properly is to take part in it. For three days, CoS Senior Staff Writer Tony Hardy breathed the Somerset air, battled rain, mud, and sun and managed to see the bands you can read about below. It's really a snapshot but one that we hope gives you a flavor of the richness of the place and might encourage you to make the trip when the festival returns in 2013. That's right, it's taking a break next year while the London Olympics take center stage and the Glastonbury pastures recover from this year's human invasion. [...]

Facebook Sometimes I wonder if Mates Of State get tired of being described with various synonyms for "adorable", but if so they've no one to blame but themselves. Rather than release the black metal opus we all know they have in them, the husband-and-wife duo of Kori Gardner and Jason Hammel continue releasing records of irresistibly sweet and catchy drum-and-organ power pop, a trend that seems set to continue with the September 13 release of Mountaintops , their first album of original material since 20082s Re-Arrange Us [...]
