Frank Yang My affection for The Jayhawks goes a long ways back, but not quite far enough. I became a fan around '96, when I got a copy of Tomorrow The Green Grass via the old BMG Music Club - remember that? - by which point co-frontman Mark Olson had already left the band. Which meant that the only Jayhawks I got to experience in real-time was the second incarnation of the band, led solely by Gary Louris. And so while I appreciate why folks refer to [...]
DeVotchKa taps into a fusion of influences in their recordings, which were famously featured in the movie Little Miss Sunshine (thanks to some KCRW airplay)! They feature guest appearances by Calexico, David Byrne and others on their new release, 100 Lovers, but Today's Top Tune "One Hundred Other Lovers" proves they are excellent on their own.

When I first mentioned the Neil Young Carnegie Hall Tribute back in October, the lineup had not been announced, let alone finalized. With the show only a few weeks away ( Feb 10, 2011 ), here's what the confirmed all-star lineup looks like so far: The Music Of Neil Young is scheduled for February 10th with an all-star list of invited artist set to pay tribute to Neil Young at Carnegie Hall. This will be the 7th Carnegie Hall tribute and confirmed to pay homage to the immortal Young are: Patti Smith [...]

DeVotchKa 100 Lovers Anti- Releasing: 1 March (US) Denver's DeVotchKa trekked out to the Arizona desert and its atmospheric environs to record their fifth album with producer Craig Schumacher, who has previously worked with Calexico and Neko Case. Not surprisingly members of Calexico appear on 100 Lovers as the two bands have always been rather sympatico aesthetic-wise. The band's expansive sound seems straight out of film and so it's a logical outgrowth of frontman Nick...

Apparently DeVotchKa front man, Nick Urata, is the Wilt Chamberlin of indie music (for you non-sports fans, that a joke). With an album called 100 Lovers and a track titled "100 Other Lovers", that's how rumors get started. "100 Other Lovers" starts out a little questionable with flutes and some instruments being played in reverse. I tend to expect droning horns and guitar from DeVotchKa instead of flutes and strings. Either way this track is really missing the depth that I expect from the band. "Contrabanda" has it but it, whatever "it" [...]

Frank Yang After a much-needed break from live music with a month spent watching television instead of bands, it was back out to the clubs on Monday night for the first gig of 2011, and it was one that as recently as a couple weeks ago I hadn't planned on attending - The Concretes at The Horseshoe. From passing listens to the singles, I didn't expect much of their latest WYWH but a proper sit-down with their second post-Victoria Bergsman album happily proved me wrong . And [...]

Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News With only a few days of 2011 in the books, it's never too early to start looking ahead to this year's festival season. After SXSW takes over Austin this March, music fans will then turn their sights to Indio, Calif. for Coachella . Message boards have been aflutter with speculation on who is being rounded up for the 12th installment, which takes place April 15-17. The sleuths over at [...]

2011 should shape up to be the best year yet for Denver's Devotchka . With a March 1 close to SXSW and surely to gain buzz record release on Anti Records , the band's 100 Lovers is their best album yet. Nick Urata, front man for the band also recently did the soundtrack for I Love You Phillip Morris starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Below is a new song, "Contrabanda" from the forthcoming Devotchka album.

DeVotchKa - Contrabanda The Colorado genre-defying quartet DeVotchKa are set to release their fifth full-length album 100 Lovers on March 1st via ANTI-Records . 100 Lovers is their latest album since 2007 and the first single, "Contrabanda", is streaming online to appease fans until the March release date. This Eastern European folk infused number features horns that abruptly blast against the crooning pipes of lead singer Nick Urata. Recorded in the Arizona desert with producer Craig Schumacher (Neko Case), the group has no doubt been [...]

Check out a new column I penned, 'Talk Talk', for Reverb about local music that includes: 16 Horsepower, Candy Claws, DeVotchKa, Git Some,Tennis, Wentworth Kersey, and Wovenhand. Phewwww. You can read the column here .

I like this song so much, that I just couldn't wait for anti- to release it as a regular old MP3. So let's welcome back DeVotchKa. The quartet's fifth album, 100 Lovers , is out March 1. DeVotchKa - Contrabanda by antirecords xoxo, alyssa
So, because I am now an adult, I read the Sunday Paper. (Reading the Sunday paper and listening to NPR are the two things I have started doing this year as an adult, see.) Anyhoo, so I was reading the Sunday paper. Drinking coffee, wearing my grownup bathrobe, being very very mature, and I came across this article , wherein I read about this awesome surf rock band. (Surf rock is super big right now, see.) They are big into yachting, also, which we at Donnybrook absolutely hold in the highest [...]
Listen to " Contrabanda " from DeVotchKa's forthcoming record, 100 Lovers (March 1, Anti- ) Daytrotter has a session with Madison's Icarus Himself . I've been obsessed with Clean Hands , who just released the four song Undone EP as a name-your-price download . Mogwai releases a video for "How to Be a Werewolf" (in Thirty Century Man). Mogwai's upcoming album, Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will , arrives 1/18/2011 on [...]
I Don t Want to Spoil The Fun, But Am I The Only One? Is it too early to be getting excited about the new Devotchka album? I think not. The Denver group is set to released their 5th studio album on March 1st, 2011 on Anti- Records. I first heard Dev ...

( Summer Camp ) At the beginning of November, SXSW announced its first batch of performers for next year's fest. These past few days while we've been watching football, eating tons of turkey and getting the flu, they've announced the second round of bands performing here in Austin in March. [ SXSW Official Music Site ] Alberta Cross (Brooklyn NY) AM (New Orleans LA) Asking Alexandria (York UK-ENGLAND) Bajzel (Poznan POLAND) Bare [...]
