beach house - devotion (carpark) i try my best not to use this word for fear of devaluing it, but mesmerizing must be the best description for beach house 's sophomore effort. from the opening shuffles of "wedding bell" to the last remaining footsteps of "home again", there is no end to the moments of enchantment alex scully and victoria legrand have created. it's a sound that literally rings in your head, disarms you, and wins over your heart, doing so in the simplest ways. listening to this reminds me of another favorite of mine [...]
Ok, look. I realize albums jam packed with very chilled out, slow paced, dreamy space music are not exactly everyone's cup of tea. However, when it's done well, it can be excellent, and that is exactly what Beach House has accomplished with Devotion - a dreamy album which is not only done just about as well as anything in this genre, but is one of the year's better albums. Dreamy doesn't even begin to describe this record, however; haunting, drifting, and unbearably delicate, everything on this album works, and works very well. Last month, Beach House released a one-off 7" of the track "Used to Be", backed with an early 4-track recording of "Apple Orchard". Now the single has a video to accompany it, shot in the desert outside Los Angeles and directed by Matt Amato.
