Often referred to as the horn player who served as the bridge between swing and bop styles, Gordon lives up to the definition with his combination of edgy, harmonious complexity and cool, Lester Young-inspired lyricism. An outstanding example of the latter can exist found in the practically flawless interpretation [...]

UPDATE: Thought we'd re-post some of our more popular Christmas efforts; this one gets requests every year. This was one of the coolest albums of Christmas music ever. Originally released in 1962, this unassuming little compilation featured an all-star cast of jazz luminaries like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and others. It was reissued on vinyl in 1980 (cover pictured above) but now it has disappeared into the mists of time. Don't bother looking for it on CD - [...]

Those that know me, should know that I have a great love of jazz; especially percussion driven works from the 1940's through to the late-60's. Its driving precision often held a sort of manic fluidity in check; like sheer madness surrounding a column of calm. As one of my favourite musicians of all time, Chico Hamilton was that calm. Hamilton was born in Los Angeles of 1921 and although his

I've had so much fun compiling list this week that I decided to do it again except with Christmas/Holiday songs. I could go out and find my favorites and then share them individually, but this way all the songs and playlist are in one little post, like a wrapped up package for you. Like I've said before, I hate the incessant playing of christmas carols for a month straight on the radio, or walking down the street, or when waiting in line for a coffee, it drives me crazy. The 98% of the songs are auto tuned crap that make [...]
Can you believe that we don't even have our Christmas tree up yet? Why? Well, my wife decided that she wanted to paint the dining room (where the tree goes) before we put it up so I've been helping her paint all weekend long. If not for the painting, this post would have gone up a day earlier. Anyhow, here are some jazzy Christmas songs for your enjoyment, but don't forget there's more! Here are the links to Day 1 , Day 2 , Day 3 , and Day 4 of this series. [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. Legendary jazz pianist Henry " Hank" Jones passed away Sunday at a hospice facility in New York at the age of 91. Throughout Jones's 60-plus-year career, he was known for what the Washington Post describes as a "light touch" around the piano, an in-depth understanding of bebop and the fast-paced phrasing that became a staple of modern jazz the '50s. Born in Vicksburg, Miss., music -- jazz in particular -- seemed to run through Jones' blood. His brother Elvin [...]

These are perfect for a quiet holiday evening drinking red wine, bourbon, or your drink of choice while snow is falling outside and the fire's burning inside. Anyone know if Ornette Coleman ever recorded a Christmas song? That would be a treat. by Chris O' Leary . It's the first and only record I ever heard of that all the squares dig as well as the jazz people, and I don't understand how and why, because I was making notes all the way. I wasn't making a melody for the squares. -Coleman Hawkins "Body and Soul," jazz standard of standards, turns eighty years old in 2010. It is jazz's benchmark, warhorse, rite of passage, litmus test: I can't think of a single major jazz musician, post-1930, who hasn't taken it on, from Roy [...]

It's high time we jazz things up around here. I ran across this Dexter Gordon gig recently, and thought there may be some jazz fans out there in Ickmusic land as well. I recommend downloading this show, and letting it accompany you as you wrap those last minute presents, or crank up the heat and get comfortable during these cold months. If you're down south of the equator, it just as easily sizzles. I'm a fan of classic jazz, but I still have a long way to go in discovering the greats. I have a lot [...]
