There's a lively collection of tweets from @thom_dorke who spent yesterday evening at the Brighton Dome enjoying the Dexys' gig, but not enjoying the drunk bloke behind him quite so much. You really need to read the whole thing, but here's a quick taste: The bloke behind us was very drunk, i say about 50 years old... 2nd song in he started laughing very loudly which was odd — Tom Meadowcroft (@thom_dorke) September 20, 2012 However he then became very loud talking through songs and [...]
Bon, je viens de chialer pendant les 7 minutes 54 secondes de It's Ok John Joe, le dernier titre de One Day I'm Going to Soar (apparemment une phrase que Kevin dieu Rowlands prononce à chaque fois qu'il se tape ... Suite
This week saw the release of the new Santigold album, which has been four years in the making, although somehow it seems a lot longer. While we're not entirely sold on Master of My Make-Believe , it did get us thinking about the fact that 2012 is shaping up as a good year for ticking off the list of long-awaited records that will (hopefully) be arriving at last. After the jump, we've pulled together a selection of 10 albums for which we've been waiting far too long — shit, some of them have been pending [...]
So the big man, Jocky Wilson, passed away last night. I don't know much about darts but he was ever-present in my childhood as the man that took the darts world by storm, as well as doing it drinking a huge amount of beer. And whiskey. But every time I hear his name I can't help but think of this: Ah, those amateurish TOTP staff. I do miss that. Miss Dexy's too, a little, for they are one of those bands that [...]

The B-52s As mentioned , Squeeze have some upcoming dates in April with The English Beat which include Bergen Performing Arts Center (4/23) in Englewood, NJ ( tickets ), Roseland Ballroom (4/28) in NYC ( tickets ), and they've since added another NJ show happening on 4/25 at Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank ( tickets ). The English Beat , who as Bill pointed out last year , [...]
Come On Eileen - Dexy's Midnight Runners I am quite giddy and also quite tired but both and neither matter. What matters is that RanDumber being available to buy online on Paddy's Day is now a reality. Oh. Betsy. Dancing! ... Continue reading

Lead single off their forthcoming comeback record.
As previously announced , '80s British soul revivalists Dexys Midnight Runners are back together after 26 years apart, and they're getting ready to release a new album called One Day I'm Going To Soar . Below, we've got the leadoff track "Nowhere Is Home," a vintage thick-accented R&B weeper with a dubious rap mini-verse. It sounds pretty good! Read More...

The Brits behind "Come On Eileen" are back together.
Over here, Dexy's Midnight Runners are known as those guys in overalls who sang "Come On Eileen," and they're staples of those One Hit Wonders countdowns that still show up on VH1 every once in a while, though. In their native England, though, the band were considered to be a great and serious soul-revival crew who had a ton of hits in the early-to-mid '80s. The band broke up in 1986, and there's been stalled-out talk of reunions since. But NME reports that the band is finally back together and ready to release its fourth [...]

I posted this piece on November 24 last year. I re-post it now as a tribute to Don Cornelius, who died, apparently by his own hand, at the age of 75 today, February 1. Don Cornelius was the father of my favourite sub-genre of music, early 1970s soul. With this, I salute him. If you say Soul Train , Americans of a certain generation and fans of soul and funk anywhere will think of funky [...]
As 2011 has come to an end, we are taking a look back at some of our favorite posts of the year by our guest editors. The 25-year career of singer/songwriter John Wesley Harding has skyrocketed of late with the publication of no fewer than three critically acclaimed novels under his birth name, Wesley Stace. [...]
The 25-year career of singer/songwriter John Wesley Harding has skyrocketed of late with the publication of no fewer than three critically acclaimed novels under his birth name, Wesley Stace. Equally amazing, the artist named for Bob Dylan's misspelling of Texas gunfighter John Wesley Harden has just released the finest album of a career that's seen [...]

If you say Soul Train , Americans of a certain generation and fans of soul and funk anywhere will think of funky dancers with big ’fros and hot threads, Don Cornelius’ flamboyantly fashionable suits and baritone voice, the animated train, hair care products ads, scrambleboards, awkward audience questions, cool catchphrases and great music. You could bet your last dollar, it was gonna be a stone gas, honey. Soul Train ’s cultural impact was tremendous. The first nationally syndicated black music show, it was owned by a black man (presenter Cornelius), staffed mostly by black people, [...]

In past instalments of this series I have been very careful to issue a caveat about the music that I would feature, emphasising that the songs were chosen not because I endorsed them, but because they had the power to transport me back to a particular time or place. This caveat still applies, but it is becoming less necessary than before as the series goes on. This episode features some of my all-time favourite singles, and a few songs which I don’t mind hearing again. There is only among these eight songs from which I’d emphatically have to distance myself. [...]
