Consonants are cool, and vowels are lame. Here are five artists who agree: 1. SBTRKT – Trials of the Past [ Young Turks ] Pronounced: "Subtract" Vowel-less and faceless, the masked producer has a knack for creating pop-friendly bass music that bridges the gap between the underground and mainstream. Arguably the most well-known producer without vowels on this list, SBTRKT just released a live album , out now. 2. DFRNT – The Way You Look At Me [...]
Wondering what tunes we've been force-feeding our neighbors over the past week? Have a listen to latest installation of Friday Favorites, where we post the songs we can't get enough of. Enjoi. Josh Bennett Armin van Buuren feat. Laura Jansen - Sound Of The Drums (Album Version) [Armada] There are several tracks that I can't get enough of on Armin van Buuren's new Intense album, but Armin's new collaboration with [...]

Edinburgh producer DFRNT (aka Alex Cowles) has been round the dance music scene for some time. He first came to our attention with when we played a track of his on our first ever Radio Magnetic broadcast . Since then the producer has gone from strength to strength with fine cuts of bass, dub and techno getting releases across several labels. With his Echodub label and new project Cut he is certainly busy. Add to that his SittingOvation blog and its surprising he has time for anything else. Well [...]

Another record that is waiting for warmer weather. The excellent Chris Coco returns with a remix of Word by DFRNT. This has that lovers rock vocal and deep, deep dub sounds. Like walking through custard (which as you know is a non-Newtonian fluid, as demonstrated in the YouTube clip below). Walking on custard

★★★☆☆ Anyone who took Metafiction with them to either a darkened room or a deep bath knows that DFRNT isn’t one to shift the goalposts once he’s made his mark. Repeating the surround sound vistas, sunken treasures of bass and sense of inching towards its target by way of ambience with hidden horsepower, Alex Cowles has no intention of changing his persona as the strong silent type. Get comfortable and let him begin, through dubstep burials, misty dubtronica, deep techno and the spaces in between tied together by that essential low-slung stammer, making jagged [...]

Recently I wrote about DFRNT 's alias AGC Esquire, a slick eighties-inspired project that called to mind the greatest (and often the most sinister) soundtracks of films like Dune, which were produced at the time, or films like Drive, which came out much later but that encapsulate the decade of decadence and lavish spending. Since that project, Alex Cowles has returned to his DFRNT alias to produce his trademark blend of dubstep, house, ambient and techno under the umbrella "bass music" category. And boy has he been busy! Not only are we treated [...]

As DFRNT , Alex Cowles treated us to a lot of modest, downtempo house and techno that kicked big bass wobbles to the curb. Well, in the spirit of the unexpected, Cowles is launching a new side-project as AGC Esquire in which he explores "overly cheesy 80s retro synth and drum stuff". This new project and its fruits wouldn't sound out-of-place on the soundtrack to 'Drive'. In fact, I'm beginning to suspect the idea for the film may have been stolen from him. This will not be the end [...]
Released a few days ago on netlabel Cuts, Actaeon EP is the latest offering from Scottish producer DFRNT . Renowned for his deep, tranquil style, this release explores a minimal drum & bass vibe, comprising intricately percussive tunes which, for the most part, instil me with a sense of calm. I wrote "for the most part" because the EP actually begins on a fairly sinister note with 'Dark Spaces', a tune which, while still bearing a low-key vibe, has a bit of a being-chased-in-the-woods-at-n ight type feel to it. The rest, however, is more relaxing than a day [...]

Scottish producer and boss of online label Cut , Alex Cowles (aka DFRNT ) has just released the tenth edition of Cut's free EPs. The new EP titled 'Actaeon' features three original tracks and two DFRNT remixes of other artists, one of Smoothiesforme and another of Seba. The track 'Everything', taken from 'Actaeon', is an exploration of ambient jungle seen through the filter of today's downtempo styles. Reminiscent of Amen Andrews or even Amon Tobin, the whole thing makes complete sense as dance music fans begin to lose patience with the heavy [...]

Introducing: ∑-Fly (Sigmafly), a Manchester based producer, creating ambient and melodic dubstep

It's only been one year since the birth of Edinburgh, UK-based netlabel Cut Records but their ninth release and first of 2012 is a rightful indication of Cut's maturity. Founded by DJ/Producer/Designer DFRNT in January 2011, Cut plays host to an assemblage of upstart UK producers. Suave, chilled-out dub-techno with elements of UK garage is the predominant style found on the majority of Cut's releases. As I said above, Existance's 'Miles Apart EP' is a strong indicator of how far Cut has progressed in the past [...]
To give credit where credit is due, I discovered Washington producer Nature Rage via DFRNT's ever impressive Insight podcast , a monthly affair which showcases talent so underground and fresh it's the musical equivalent of a baby mole (I believe the technical term is 'pup'). On his twitter account Monsieur Rage states that he makes "DEEP electronic music with lots of BASS" and it would seem that he's pretty good at it too. This particular tune, entitled 'Games', sounds like someone's pressed fast forward on a futuristic dream sequence and whisked us away to a deep valley of [...]
DFRNT - Suspended In The Deep by DFRNT Are you ready to jump in? This is a bit of an unsettling track, initially built around the basis that the subject was suspended in the serenity of the ocean, floating calmly and effortlessly . As the track progresses, it becomes more unsettling, and ultimately becomes a tragic story. I actually really enjoyed producing this, and giving the audio far more of a story. A narrative. It's probably the most unsettling track I've produced, [...]
