Absolutely sterling edit of Manchester's Diagram Brothers first single from ZNTN . Diagram Brothers - We Are All Animals (ZNTN edit) by ZNTN

New old sounds Normally EMJ is dedicated to posting on new music, admittedly we do trip back in time a bit every now and then, but after some extensive browsing today I found so many great old gems I'd never heard/heard of before I thought it'd be interesting to share some with my fellow music lovers. Admittedly most of these were found on the eternally amazing WFMU's website, from one of their DJ's compilations posted in 2006, called Obey The New Wave: 1980 and all [...]
Reggae had a big influence on the post-punk sound. This wasn't always a good thing: you would get far too many hamfisted attempts at playing offbeat clipped guitar and clumsy rhythms. When it worked, however, it could produce some really special results. We would have never had Bela Lugosi's Dead without the influence of dub production techniques, and nor would the world have been blessed with I Didn't Get Where I Am Today By Being A Right Git . Given our rainy city's fondness for eulogising it's past, the collective altzeimers suffered with regards to The Diagram Brothers, aka the best band to ever hail from Manchester, is both peculiar and depressing. Luckily London four piece Electricity in Our Homes aren't quite so forgetful. They've embraced the aforementioned Brothers' love of dischordandce and married it with their own clipped rhythmic sensiblility to create one of the most exciting musical propositions of the past eighteen months. This Wednesday they'll be bringing their buttoned down brand of dissonance to the Shoot Me Club at [...]

This month's DJ comp harkens all the way back to 2001 (and 21 years further back from there), from the late great program Rhubarb Cake . Here is Douglas' marathon premium from that year, titled Obey The New Wave - 1980 and all that-- UK DIY, etc. Here's how Douglas described it at the time: 23 blurts of intense, delicious, mysterious and staggeringly unusual UK DIY and art-post-punk, circa 1980. Grab this comp quick - these tracks will be up for one week only. Nancy Sesay and the Melodaires - C'est [...]
