Owen Pallett @ The Mod Club: photo by Michael Ligon The Mod Club last Tuesday night was the scene of a way sold-out show featuring headliner Owen Pallett on the occasion of his most recent album "Heartland". Signing to Domino Records in the UK and recently dropping his 'Final Fantasy' moniker in favour of his own name, Mr. Pallett's been a beacon for Toronto/Canadian talent for sometime now, and there was no doubt as indicated by the warm response from the crowd that he is very much [...]
Not too long ago, our friends at Chromewaves introduced us to Toronto's Diamond Rings , the latest project from John O'Regan of the band D'Urbervilles . John recently performed a new track called Give It Up for Southern Souls , a newer session site that collects performances of the most prolific active musicians from Southern Ontario in out-of-character locales. [...]

Filed under: New Music , You Oughta Know , Canada One of the hottest music videos to hit your inbox last summer featured a lycra-clad singer shaking it in front of a green screen like he just stepped out of a Vanilla Ice video. The ditty in question, 'All Yr Songs,' by Toronto pop act Diamond Rings , was bouncy, bright and catchy as hell, and music blogs rightfully heaped on the praise. But the video, with its tights-and-acid wash wardrobe, glam day-glo makeup and charmingly awkward dance moves -- [...]
We've seen an unprecedented year of new music in 2009. There's been enough diversity to satisfy practically anyone's music tastes. We definitely had a surge in surfer sound revivals, dreamy bedroom pop, lo-fi garage rock, and psychedelic electronica, but we also heard just about everything in between. It'll be interesting to see what trends emerge next year. Before we leave 2009 for good, we wanted to recap of our top rated album releases [...]

Grand Crew So everybody's holidays going well? Been catching up with friends and family, perhaps indulging in a little post-holiday retail therapy? That's largely been my last few days, and in between all that, watching lots and Lost and lots of television. So in the spirit of that sloth, here's some stuff for y'all to watch - particularly if you, like me, are stuck at work this week. Grand Crew is a site based out of France that I hadn't heard of until last [...]

Jeremy R. Jansen A birthday party is a bit of an odd time to announce a memorial, but such was the case this past February when, at the end of the successful 9th anniversary bash for Toronto's venerable Wavelength weekly music series, it was announced that the 2010, 10th anniversary shows would also mark the final edition of the showcase... at least in its present form. While the weekly showcases are ending, the Wavelength marque and ethos will continue on via monthly showcases and one-off events, thus ensuring that the stages that gave [...]

December 18th was surely a fun time at Cafe Dekcuf. It was a festive holiday mood besides Cafe Dekcuf being cold when I got there. Playing there were: The Balconies Here is a video of The Slo that I taped. Sorry on the focusing part. Parlovr [...]
(photo: Robin Sharp) Anyone familiar with Toronto's Bellwoods music scene is already well aware of The D'Urbervilles , whose debut album, We Are the Hunters came out in 2008. There hasn't been much new music from the band in the last year, but that hasn't meant the member have been dormant. his past summer, John O'Regan, the band's vocalist and guitarist, emerged as Diamond Rings and put a little sparkle and shine back into the Toronto music scene. Billed on Myspace as "an emotional outlet" for one [...]

Leigh Righton For a band that's so good at doing things quietly, Calgary's Woodpigeon certainly has a thing for volume. Their debut Songbook was originally released in 2006 in Canada and Japan, then reissued in Europe in 2008 to great critical acclaim. Their next release Treasury Library Canada wasn't even intended to be a proper follow-up - just a collection of outtakes and leftovers from Songbook intended for sale as a limited run direct from the band. [...]

Filed under: Holy Hell , Canada , New Releases After his homemade video for 'All Yr Songs' was removed from YouTube by request of Sony/BMG, Toronto electro-pop act Diamond Rings (John O'Regan, also of D'Urbervilles ) was " upset ," to say the least -- mainly because he never gave consent. "They just took it down. Apparently, it was a 'copyright infringement,'" he tells Spinner. "I went back and watched it again and again [but] couldn't find anything that would warrant that kind of attention." [...]

David Waldman The tale of Toronto's Diamond Rings was one of the unexpected little Toronto triumphs of the Summer, what with the electro-glam alter-ego of D'Urbervilles frontman Jon O'Regan releasing a fun video to go with his debut 73 single, "All Yr Songs", and having it quickly get not only catch the ear of Pitchfork founder Ryan Schreiber, but also garner title of "Best New Music" by the same tastemaking site, leading to plenty of attention, singles sales and plum opening slots. The happy tale took an unfortunate [...]

Tuesday, December 1, 2009 Below you'll find the second part of my Top 50 Songs Of 2009! Enjoy. Couple of things ... My only criteria for the list was that the tracks had to be from the pool of over 600 that made an appearance here at Side One: Track One over the course of the last 11 months. This list is not a good representation of my Top 25 Albums Of 2009 (they will [...]

Tonight's song comes from John O'Regan, and his indie-pop/electronic-folk (yeah I'm genre tagging something electronic-folk) side-project Diamond Rings; his main project is fronting the Toronto-based indie-rock act The D'Ubervilles. As far as I can tell, the ridiculously charming All Yr Songs can only be found on a 7-inch vinyl split-release featuring Diamond Rings and Kingston, Ontario's PS I Love You. Unfortunately, said release has been sold out and I have no leads on how to get more music from Diamond Rings. If anyone has any information on a forthcoming release from the band, let me know. Until then, you [...]

Frank Yang In leading up to Friday night's show at Lee's Palace, I'd wondered aloud as to why it had taken The Wooden Sky so long to play a proper hometown show, what with their latest record, the ex If I Don't Come Home You'll Know I'm Gone having come out all the way back in August. Walking into Lee's, I got my answer - they were building their sets. The stage was breathtakingly decorated with all manner of props and sculptures built of paperback [...]

Still going strong two weeks into our programming on, the great, Indie-Verse radio and we've got another nice lineup of tunes. We've got the local scene covered with some tracks from Fergus & Geronimo and The Uptown Bums. Also, my new collective friends from Oxford, MS, Cats Purring , have their fair share of play time. Listen to the show today at 1 PM CST and again on Saturday at the same time. We'll be in Denton (at Rubber Gloves) tonight for our show with Crystal Antlers, Video and Uptown Bums. Come say hi. Head here [...]

I watched Gigantic for the first time tonight. It was an odd movie, for sure, but I was delighted to see the movie's last few seconds scored by Animal Collective's "Did You See The Words?" It was the perfect odd-ball song to close an odd-ball film. What was better yet was the music binge I went on right after the credits closed. These songs are what make up this twentieth episode of the pmaCAST. Hopefully you'll find the track list fitting of this milestone episode. pmaCAST #20: There's Something Living [...]
LA CORPS MINCE DE FRANCOIS Are blogs really the modern taste-makers they proclaim to be? OK, so we stamp our self-proclaimed authority on new music, but really we're simply the stream in which it flows, rather than being its source. The surfers of scenes and the social butterflies of new music if you will. Bands and record labels are the ones that actually carve out the direction. We are the reporters, giving voice to the good out of the plethora of crap that's out there, making sure that the bands and labels we use [...]

Frank Yang That La Roux appears to be the leader in the "2009 British female indie-pop derby" is surprising to me. Not necessarily because their self-titled debut is sub-par, though I do find it a rather samey and thin-sounding overall though more '80s-correct, but because I felt that Little Boots and Florence & The Machine , to name a couple of other contenders for the title, were not only more accessible and/or marketable, but simply put out stronger records. If you want to rate them based on the [...]
