The name Andrew Love will probably mean little to most music fans; but as a leader of the Memphis Horns (with Wayne Jackson), everybody will know at least some tunes the tenor saxophonist played on. The Memphis Horns were part of Stax's session crew, and they also recorded on Hi Records. You'll know them from tracks such as Elvis Presley's Suspicious Minds, Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, Al Green's Let's Stay Together and Dusty Springfield's Son Of A Preacher Man. They are believed to have played on something like fifty #1 singles! This year they received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, [...]

The six-song L.A. Noire Remixed (Verve) is the soundtrack to the hot new Rockstar video game starring about half the cast of Mad Men. On the digital-only EP, songs from the '30s and '40s by Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Jordan, Dinah Washington, Gene Krupa and Lionel Hampton are remixed by Dave Sitek (TV On [...]

Happy 4th of July weekend! Enjoy tons of bbq, sun and fireworks. It's what our forefathers would've wanted us to enjoy. Also, Budweiser is commemorating the 4th this year by serving "freedom beer" in the red, white and blue cans. Freedom ain't free, it costs people like you and me. Ava Takes A Walk - Loose Lips Sink Ships (A.G.Trio Remix) JEREMY GLENN - NEW LIFE (AMTRAC REMIX) Disclosure-I Love...That You Know (colo remix) The Chain Gang of 1974 [...]
To add another level of authenticity to their hit game L.A. Noire , Rock Star Games tapped an entire team - Andrew Hale, Simon Hale, Stephen Coates and The Real Tuesday Weld, and Claudia Brucken - to compose an original in-game score complete with era-specific tracks. As players search for clues in 19402s Los Angeles, gameplay is also accompanied by licensed classics by Billie Holiday, Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Dinah Washington. Recently, though, Verve Records gave the soundtrack a bit of a face lift with the L.A. Noire Remixed EP, which [...]
Johnnie Taylor was smooth as silk back in 1973.

mp3: Dinah Washington - This Bitter Earth This Bitter Earth is a seemingly sad song from the Queen of the Blues, Dinah Washington, with just a tiny twist of hope right at the end. Written by songwriter, producer and A&R executive, Clyde Otis, it was released by Washington in 1960 and climbed to the top of the R&B charts. Washington would have been no stranger to the feelings of heartbreak that she became so famous for singing about -- she divorced seven times before having a fatal drug overdose in 1963, aged just [...]

I promised a while back to follow up the first two New York mixes with one in black & white. In the interim, the two Christmas in Black & White mixes ( here and here ) were quite popular, so I hope that this collection of songs about or set in New York, spanning 30 years, will find an audience. And I hope that some of these songs will inspire the listener to seek out more music by some of the artists who are largely forgotten now. [...]
Another good recommendation from Twitter. Dinah sings Bessie - it does not get much better than this! Electric Chair Blues Judge your honor, hear my plea, before you open up your court, I don't want no sympathy--I just cut my good man's throat, Found him with a travellin' Jane--I warned her before, I had my knife, and, well, it's plain,The rest you ought to know cho: Judge, judge, good kind judge, You can send me to the 'lectric chair, Judge, judge, hear my [...]

I have to be honest about it. I've never been particularly inclined toward making New Year's resolutions. That's not to say I haven't tried from time to time, but not so much lately. And it's certainly not because I lack faults to correct. I have a whole lot more than my share - just ask Mrs. Big Geez. But resolutions can be a whole lot of trouble. Most of us end up moaning and groaning about how we weren't able to stick to them, and we feel worse that we did before we ever started. Who [...]

[Movie still: Chungking Express ] Now that I'm settled [back] into Chicago I decided that it's time to take a break from HGTV and give Interstate 8 a little lovin'. Let's begin... Dennis Brown: Things in Life [zshare] Thank you, Wong Kar-wai! Wouldn't have discovered this song without you. This song fits the film Chungking Express so well. I was humming it all day after watching it. Dennis Brown, dubbed The Crown Prince of Reggae, brings the goods and [...]
