The 15th of the month means Music Alliance Pact day, when music blogs share the best their country has to offer with the rest of the world. Thanks to the latest addition of Finland's Glue , MAP now stands at 25 blogs/members/nations. It is raging out of control but we did create this monster. As Scotland representatives, it's our job to pick 12 acts per year to foist upon an unsuspecting global audience, so we choose very carefully. We hope you agree April's selection is a worthy one, be sure to let us know what [...]
Friday night of Canadian Music Fest was an enjoyable mix of bands that I've seen several times before, and others that I have meant to see but due to circumstances, never did. Most of my music loving friends were shocked to hear that I had still never gotten around to seeing Dinosaur Bones perform. Along with Still Life Still , they are currently the most well supported act in the city, and to say that my expectations were high is no mere exaggeration. I do quite enjoy [...]

I didn't intend to spend the night at the Horseshoe but you know what they say about best intentions. Anyway, I had been meaning to see Emma-Lee at C'est What but was running late and so thought I would check out Dinosaur Bones instead. However I only managed to catch their last song so I really have no comment on them. The song I did hear sounded really good, though. NYE by Dinosaur Bones Now to clear something up, I had said that the acoustics at the [...]

Ian West Canadian Music Week - sorry, Canadian Music fest , as the showcase component has now been renamed - is a tricky time for me, because as much as I'd like to take in as much of the shows on offer as possible, I need to be mindful of saving energy for the big show - SxSW - the following week. To this end, I tend to be very particular about what I choose to see during CMW/F, avoiding if I can bands I've seen or can easily [...]

Kyle Hutton When Rajiv, singer and guitarist for Oh No Forest Fires , contacted me about running this giveaway, he offered up a decidedly graphic if colourful name for the bill which will grace the stage at Lee's Palace in a couple Fridays. Unfortunately, I couldn't think of a way to utilize said phrase without showing up in Google searches that I'd rather not appear in, so I'll have to keep it between us - unless he takes my suggestion and gets t-shirts with it made. But the facts are these. On March [...]

myspace Sometimes the buzz about a local band is electric. If you scour the MP3 sites or see any show flyers on your walk to work, you start seeing certain bands playing with the big boys and that momentum becomes unstoppable. Soon they are playing every show and with the overwhelming amount of blogs and reviewers out there, that hype becomes a double edged sword. As Herb Simon said, " A wealth of information creates a poverty of attention " and with hundreds of people telling you to check out the same band and [...]

Caleb Buyers Let's be honest, there's not a lot of reason for there to be a Carl Newman solo record. The man is the chief songwriter in The New Pornographers , an outfit that turns out material at a pretty decent rate all things considered, and it's not as though he has a metal jones to itch that wouldn't work in the context of the Pornographers - when he puts on the AC Newman hat, he's still the consummate popsmith. But the whys and wherefores are his business - for the rest of us, [...]

Toronto - I think most people had given up hope about clear skies this season. It's been snowing every other night for weeks. The discussion is no longer about the weather - it's about what we are doing despite it. About time, I need positive thinking. We walked in to the later half of The Paint Movement's set. It was a mix of easy-listening jazz and normal 3 piece rock, and a bongo drum, whose business there was not entirely clear other than he is a good friend who jams. I could seriously NOT hear the bongo. But the melodies [...]

Last year my tardiness caused me to miss out on including Andre Ethier 's On Blue Fog in my 2007 year end best of, even though it would have definitely been there had I heard the album when I should have. Well wash, rinse and repeat, it look like I've done the same thing again this year. Andre Ethier's sequel to that brilliant album is entitled Born Of Blue Fog and it was released late last year to such little fanfare that I once again heard about it too late. And just like it's predecessor, [...]
Have you heard of Dinosaur Bones yet? Have a listent to their track NYE below. Keep your eyes out for these Toronto natives in 2009. I like em. The guys are starting the year off right with their first birthday at the Horseshoe this Saturday night (January 17th) with openers: The Junction, Black Hat Brigade, and the Paint Movement If you want to celebrate one year of being a band with the Dinosaur Bones boys, then send an email to panic@panicmanual.com with the subject: My Favourite Dinosaur Is _________ (fill in [...]

DINOSAUR BONES - SELF TITLED E.P. When it comes to the world of bloggers and music geeks, I'm just one fish in a massive ocean of pretentiousness, but when it comes to me and my friends, I'm usually the guy who recommends local bands to my peers. However, Dinosaur Bones have already done a pretty good job at making a name for themselves, and it seems like many of those same friends have been the ones encouraging me to check out this band for a little while now. [...]

I have to admit that a part of me has been enjoying the last few weeks away from the concert goings. I've read somewhere that the best way to know whether or not you're addicted to something is to try doing without it for awhile and see how you hold up. At this point I can honestly say that live music has finally become an enjoyable pastime in my life without being the hardcore addiction that it once was. So, now that I know I can quit anytime, it only makes sense to get right back at it again, doesn't [...]
