Last weekend, Backstage Rider 's Mikala Taylor hit the high seas for five days of distortion. She returned safely and unscathed, though we can't speak for her ears. We're pretty sure she had a blast, nonetheless, but we'll let the photos do the talking. We're not sure when, exactly, the full surrealism of being on a boat sailing from Miami to Mexico as part of The Weezer Cruise actually hit. Was it when Weezer played "Hash Pipe" shortly after the ship's horns sounded and we left Vice City? Or was it [...]

Last night at Miami's Grand Central, Dinosaur Jr. and its younger equivalent, Yuck , shoved out two loud, satisfying sets. Whether you were an adolescent hipster or a grunge enthusiast in your 50s, the scene was packed with either ilk. Low lit, noisy, and smoky, the venue's aesthetics contrasted well with the crowd's rebellious, buzzing energy. Short of a 7-11 parking lot, you couldn't have asked for a better dive. Yuck's self-titled, debut album is about a year old now, and since its release, the British punkers have garnered excellent reviews. Despite the [...]

After reading Vic Galloway's rather nice article in today's Herald on the rise of bands in Scotland influenced by both grunge and lo-fi slacker indie rock. Recording for our upcoming split 123 with Manchester bands Waiters and Sex Hands has seen pals recommend I have a good listen to The Meat Puppets too, if that's the kind of stuff I'm into - particularly if that's the kind of guitar sound I am enjoying at the moment. So that's what this podcast is loosely about. As I explain, despite growing up at the perfect time [...]
Did you love seeing Dinosaur Jr. play Bug live in 2011? Or maybe you missed it, and now you're kicking yourself-literally? Maybe you're doing crazed yoga moves while wearing metal cleats so that you can really pound the spiky soles directly into your own eye sockets again and again, each time hoping that this bloodied kick might be the one to flood your body with enough pain to extinguish the burning RAGE you feel at yourself for missing the ultimate band reunion experience of your lifetime? [...]

Nerd culture collides again for Aggronautix's new bobblehead , facsimile of J. Mascis. There is some precedent for this. But they're thinking big this time. J is accurately sculpted right down to the big ole glasses, rockin' riff grip, and signature silver mane that features REAL DOLL HAIR - a first for Aggronautix! Barriers are being broken here, people. I would still rather have any of these , honestly (#16 is the best).

With a Jing Jang here and a Jang Jong there, barring the ever-illusive Joe Lean remnants of the inferred major-screwing, LP-scrapping troupe are scattered ubiquitously throughout a seething Shacklewell Arms. Tonight's bunch, adjudged on pure and simply superficial old attire, are out in force to witness TOY whip a four-legged Dalston-centric residency into knowingly lackadaisical, forcedly monochromic action. Conversely, those here congregated muster minimal enthusiasm in indulging in Ralegh Long's brand of lightly melodramatic, folk-lilted chanson: somewhere on the side of the long, lonesome, and meandering road between scrapbook emperor Jeffrey Lewis and perennial prog titans The Tangent, his is [...]

There has always been tension between Dinosaur Jr's Lou Barlow and J Mascis. At the peak of their success with the release of Bug , their relationship hit a tumultuous low when Mascis attacked Barlow on stage. The group broke up. In 2005, the original group reunited for a tour, but did not perform many of the songs from Bug . "We always had a stigma attached to it as a not so great artifact of a not so great part of time," explained Lou Barlow. Now twenty years later Dinosaur Jr. just finished playing the entire album along a West Coast tour [...]
