By Cat Schaupp April 30, 2013 Here at Muso's Guide, we got pretty stuck in to the build up for Record Store Day 2013 . In between vainly attempting to reduce our list of desired records from this year's releases down to a reasonable number, we got chattering away to record companies around the country about their involvement with the big day in the attempt to find out what life is like on the other side of the till. In addition to being a significant day for record stores wanting to increase their [...]

Sleeping Bag Records was founded by Arthur Russell, which was something I didn't know, along with William Socolov, and long time record promoter vet Juggy Gales, the guy behind the second biggest selling recording ever, holiday tune 'White Christmas'. Maybe Arthur somehow convinced these bigshots into throwing down some bread for a proto house record label, maybe they approached him for his partnership and guidance, either way the catalog Sleeping Bag produced over the course of a few years in the early nineteen eighties is legendary and has since changed hands many times since the company ceased business. If and when you think of underground Disco and the beginnings of House music please consider some facts about Walter Gibbons: 1. He produced the 1st commercially available 123 single ever. 2. Was a master of reel to reel remixing and re-editing. Some say he invented the remix. 3. Collaborated with the likes of Arthur Russell plus he remixed and worked with tons of Salsoul cats. 4. Hands down regarded as one of the most skilled DJs of his time (NY 70s-80s) 5. Beedle called his style the "blueprint for [...]

Avant-guard musician Arthur Russell's disco project - a fixture of the 1980's New York leftfield dance scene.

Friday, May 8th @ Slowdown, Goo presents: We contemplated the fact that Courtney Love might be upset about this use of this image of the talking Kurt Cobain action figure , but then we contemplated how much money she probably makes off those things, so fuck it! We're throwing this party to honor our beloved and departed celebrities, as well as a genre of music which was prematurely declared deceased - disco! Disco is as prevalant as ever! If you don't believe us, ask A-Trak [...]

Some potentially great news from Soul Jazz records . Frustrated by the ridiculous third party prices for The World of Arthur Russell compilation, I decided to email Soul Jazz about the possibility of a reissue. Admittedly, I was writing out of frustration and didn't expect an immediate response or answer. So it was to my great surprise to get a reply the very next day (!) with the news that Soul Jazz plans to reissue The World of Arthur Russell at the end of the month (!!!). [...]

Ah, what a wonderful place the internet can be! I've managed to find a rip of a whole night at Glasgow institution ' Optimo ' courtesy of http://rippedinglasgow.blogspo t.com . Yes, it's 4 hours long but it's the best 4 hours I've had in ages. Highlight has to be this lovely dub-disco track by Dinosaur L which you can find at about 1h30 of the Optimo mix or just download here: Dinosaur L - Go Bang! (Thank You Arthur Edit) Go to [...]
Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell Trailer looks awesome. Really looking forward to it. Dinosaur L - Go Bang (Thank You Arthur Edit) Quando Quango - Atom Rock (Remix) Koushik - Be With

Arthur Russell has a back story that a French novelist would love. A gay man from rural Iowa who moved from one metropolis (San Francisco) to another (New York City), following an artistic lodestar (Allen Ginsburg), harboring his own secret genius that would move people to tears one moment and be forgotten the next, ending with a obscure and tragic death (from AIDS). In celebration of Russell's enduring legacy, I present five of his essential cuts: "Is It All Over My Face" [...]

If there was any doubt that disco producer, cellist, record label owner, and composer Arthur Russell worked in every conceivable mode of popular music, the new release Love is Overtaking Me should put it to rest. It's been a few weeks since I've posted, due to a general disinterest in writing and having other things to do - like play with the kids, or watch Around The Horn and PTI, or veg to CNN and so on and so forth. I have still been consuming as much music as before, I just haven't felt the urge to tell you about it. Well, that changes today with this funky Friday playlist. Dinosaur L - #1 (You're

The second good new release out today is a nice liitle four-track EP on Rough Trade featuring four different artists doing covers of Arthur Russell songs. It’s the brainchild of Jens Lekman , who fell in love with Russell’s music, via the Another Thought compilation, whilst wandering round Germany when he was 19. He suggested a covers EP first to his friend Victoria Bergsman, then the ball got rolling and not only her but Electrelane’s Verity Susman and The Hidden Camera’s Joel Gibb were both on board. [...]
Gotta love the record industry: it appears that the album format is not selling that well with the advent of the 'digital revolution' and all, you know, CDs are overpriced and most of the stuff in... Arthur Russell Considering the young age of a lot of folks putting out music now, it is easy to forget what came before all of this. I, myself, am guilty of being young and lacking knowledge of the past, but I find myself craving to be able to throw down a disco set off 12 inches, if I could. Sometimes we get wrapped up in what the latest electro-house stomper will be. More importantly, a lot of playlists out there are beginning to look [...]
Arthur Russell's Springfield Coming Out This Week Steve Knutson of Audika Records hit up our comments section this past December with an astonishing confirmation: And yes, the DFA is remixing a previously unreleased electro track called Springfield, which I'll release in the....spring. It's totally sublime. Keep 'em peeled. [...]
