Last month I announced the end of the In Memoriam column. The reaction, by comments and messages via email and Facebook, surprised me. I had been under the impression, acquired by the few comments they received and the very average hits recorded, that the feature was only mildly popular (which serves to stress the importance to comment on posts in features you enjoy). The labour required for the In Memoriam feature remains prohibitive, but by cutting out what really took a lot of time – researching and collating the music and pictures – I can still provide a [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Q + A Allison Michael Orenstein It was with his street corner buddies from the Bronx, Carlo Mastrangelo, Angelo D'Aleo and the recently deceased Fred Milano that Dion Dimucci changed the musical world. As Dion and the Belmonts , they all but owned the late-1950s pop charts with tunes including 'I Wonder Why' and 'A Teenager in Love.' DiMucci found even [...]
This songs has been stuck in our heads for a while, so it's nice to see it get a video. It's one of the best tracks of the season and if Aura Dione gets the right exposure, she could be huge! This is taken from her album Before The Dinosaurs . Filed under: Beats , Clip , Scandi Tagged: album , aura , dione , geronimo , new , single , video
"Hey, hey, hum-ba-diddy-diddy!"
Dion DiMucci may not be a name often associated with underground rock and roll. As the New York teen behind such inner city oldies as "The Wanderer" and "Runaround Sue," Dion is usually branded as representative of the slick, early-1960s pop sound that came to replace teenagers' grittier rock and roll heroes like Elvis Presley [...]
Putting together these monthly mixes has become one of my favorite things to do on Pretty Goes with Pretty. It's not like putting together a typical mix, which usually has some unifying theme. No, these are mixes made with strict rules: all the songs were downloaded within the last month all are new to me, and it should go without saying that I think they're all great the mix is intended to be listened to straight through and should be a satisfying experience (The fourth, til-now-unspoken rule is that each [...]
This is from the album Sanctuary/ Suite for Late Summer. The first album was released in 1971 and the second in 1972.

Dion DiMucci may not be a name often associated with underground rock and roll. As the New York teen behind such inner city oldies as "The Wanderer" and "Runaround Sue," Dion is usually branded as representative of the slick, early-1960s pop sound that came to replace teenagers' grittier rock and roll heroes like Elvis Presley or Chuck Berry. Through the years, however, the singer has shown himself a cat of many clothes, whether through rediscovering life as a soft-rock songwriter in the early 1970s or acting muse to Phil Spector's wall-of-sound later in the decade. DiMucci's peak, however, [...]
UK musician Laurence Collyer folkifies cover songs on his homemade studio album 'The Wanderer' and in live shows to create tales of lonely longing.

Dion - (I Was) Born To Cry You'll have a pretty hard time finding a better free mix tape than the Diddywah one that is up over on probably the best music blog online, Aquarium Drunkard . Click on the picture above to go find out more and, most importantly, get the link to download it. Then, put it on your headphones and pretend that you're in a sweet Tarantino movie. Or, just listen to it. Your call. Just don't don't go download [...]

Dungen by Sarah Morrison Just when you think summer's over, a heat wave comes to L.A. and Waved Out 2 comes to the Echoplex, to hose us down with the reverb-soaked sounds of teenage noise pop, chill wave, surf punk and psych-folk. I didn't know what to expect. The only bands listed on the bill whose names I recognized were the trippy headliners, the Entrance Band and Dungen, who were playing the first show of their US tour. Sponsored in conjunction by the Aquarium Drunkard music blog, KXLU and L.A. RECORD, the all-day event featured an [...]

Riffling through my big sister's records the other day, I noticed a couple of boxes in the back of her closet. Opening one of the boxes, I discovered some big stacks of 45 singles ... yeah! So today let's drop the spindle on the turntable and slap on a few of her glorious singles. Let's concentrate today on people known in the 1970s as "singer/songwriters" - performers who turned out to be the best representatives of their own material. When Bob Welch came into the spotlight, he had some big shoes to fill - in 1971 [...]
Having kicked heroin after years of teen-idol stardom as the leader of the Belmonts, Dion released "Daddy Rollin' (In Your Arms)" in 1968 as the b-side to "Abraham, Martin and John." The underlying vibe of the tune was described by Dion as "(the song) can be a love song or it can be about drugs. [...]

I just realized I never shared this Arctic Monkeys cover with you guys. It's the band's cover of Dion's "Only You Know" from when they visited radio station 101.9 RXP back in December 2009. The Monkeys are truly one of a kind. This cover is brilliant. If your an Arctic fan, this is a must have. Posted below is the video of the band performing the video. I also included mp3's of both their cover & the original. [mp3]: Arctic Monkeys - Only You Know (Dion Cover) [mp3]: [...]

Photography by MamaTepley (circa the 80s) "I realize that I will never fully understand the millions of bizarre ways that music brings people together." - Rob Sheffield I remember driving from Winnipeg to Yorkton, SK. A 500km (300m) and approx 8 hour drive. I can only vividly remember doing the trip twice but the journey there & back felt like we could've been travelling 20 times over. The one trip I remember the most was when my dad and I went by ourselves (it is his side of the [...]
