I've always thought that 50's rock has the short end of the critical stick. It's simplicity and unpretentiousness is often confused for lack of depth But the range of rock, r&b, and pop that emerged in the second half of the decade is some of the most awe-inspiring American music there has ever been. Besides the "founding fathers" of rock and r&b – Elvis, Ray Charles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, et al, I've always had an enormous love for Doo-Wop. The beauty of the voices and harmonies in Doo-Wop have always occurred for [...]

I have a Valentines mix tape that I made for the sloppy make-out party we are throwing, the Broken Hearts Ball . It's not too sappy... It has a bit of anti valentines stuff along with some sweetheart stuff to make you feel warm and fuzzy. Hunk The Drunk - Broken Hearts Valentines Mix Tape Tracklisting: Intro Lykke Li - Dance. Dance. Dance. The Clash - Lost in The Supermarket Dion - Teenager In Love Link [...]

This week we celebrate a moment of optimism and hope as welcome a new leader. But first we take this opportunity to remember a giant who helped make this all possible. Martin Luther King Jr. implored us to not be merely satisfied with installing people in places of power and hoping that they will make a change - he taught us that change must begin with each of us, in our own hearts. So I think I've decided to do a new feature here at Fantastic Weapon. In addition to the (usually) weekly edition of the Sunday Morning Mixtape, I'm gonna do a Flashback Friday that'll either include a video, mp3, or both of something old. Let's define old, in terms of music: before 1980. Mostly before 1970, but before 1980 is gonna have to work, otherwise I'll probably start breaking rules left and right. The first post in FantasticWeapon.com's Flashback Friday feature is something different from a very popular 1960's doo-wop artist. I found this track a few months ago when [...]

While the Brill Building (at 1619 Broadway) is known worldwide as the place where 1960's pop music was born (or least written down with pencil and paper), up the street at 1650 Broadway there was plenty of action to be found, as well. By some accounts, 1650 was more the epicenter of pop music than its famous cousin a few blocks south. 1650 was the location of Aldon Music , the music company founded by Don Kirschner and Al Nevins, the publishing home to many of the great "Brill Building" songwriters, including Doc [...]

H oly shiznit. We're sold. Today we've been given solid proof that there is a God. Mean Girls , Pretty In Pink , & Clueless are all being developed into video games!!! Variety reports that you'll be able to be a total valley slut for a bunch of the popular gaming systems, --even in terms of for something as small as the portable Nintendo DS [...]

Well I put this up now because I'll be working from Milwaukee Friday, and thus, unable to provide a good proper, week ending post. I always have mixed feelings about going back to Milwaukee. I'm often asked if I could ever live there again. I don't know. And it's not a knock on the city -- indeed, I go back many times a year if not for work-related activities, then for Marquette basketball games, to catch up with old friends, concerts, etc. etc. It's just that I kind of feel like the Milwaukee chapter of my [...]

A little pop music trivia for you: Other than Bob Dylan and The Beatles themselves, who's the only other pop singer depicted on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band? The answer is Bronx-born Dion Francis DiMucci, better known as simply Dion, who is entering his 51th year (!) as a recording artist. He's as active as ever, having released five albums this decade including the back-to-back triumphs Bronx in Blue (2006) and Son of Skip James (2007). But today I want to write about 1968 B-side Daddy Rollin' (In Your Arms), a once-hidden gem in [...]
Filed under: MP3 Spinner.com : New York music-scene veteran crooner Dion has performed doo-wop, pop, R&B, folk, blues, country and gospel in his fifty-year career. Now the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer has recently unveiled his new album, 'Son of Skip James' -- an effort full of... Read more
The following mp3 is from Dion's new album Son of Skip James. I think I love the original blues songs - particularly "Devil Got My Woman" by Skip James - too much to warm up to Dion's mellow covers,... **Click on the link to read the full post, download mp3s, and comment.**

The other night I was lucky/unlucky enough to see the Dylan tribute concert at the Beacon theater, a benefit/tribute thing that was as formless as Todd Haynes' much ballyhooed and forthcoming film I'm Not There promises to be. Don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see the film, I'm just not expecting much. The concert was kinda a big mess, but sprinkled with some outstanding performances by John Doe, Jim Jones, Dan Hicks, Al Kooper, Calexico, and others. After a while, I was overcome by the feeling that I'd rather hear Dylan do these songs than [...]

Two cd-compilation The Trip from Family Recordings suddenly fell into my hand. I almost dropped it. There's so much different stuff from the archives going on here, compiled by Pulp-people Jarvis Cocker & Steve Mackey, that it almost drowns you. There is shit - David Essex, Neil Sedaka for instance!, but overall this compilation is top ace. It's a really folksy, countrified, rockabilly and tenderhearted curation about people, relationships and how lovers slip away, meet up and slips away and meet up and... It's quite compelling and I'm quite happy to the fact that Cocker and Mackey [...]
