I've always loved walking. The best part, one really gets a feel for their surroundings, rather than the carousel effect of watching the world through the window of a fast moving car, bus or train. I enjoy walking so much that I often try (unsuccessfully) to convert my fellow Southern Californians to leave the car behind and hoof it - this is a place where peeps will jump into their auto to drive two blocks to a fast food joint. Now, there's places humans shouldn't walk and I found that out during a Summer in the Nevada desert. I walked [...]
Isaac Lee Hayes, Jr. passed away yesterday after being found unconscious near a treadmill in his home in Memphis. He was 65. It would be difficult to overstate Hayes' importance to '60s and '70s music. Hayes' work with Stax/Volt Records in the mid-'60s layed the foundation for the Memphis soul sound. His hugely important solo career furthered the range of soul and R&B, and also contributed to both disco and rap. Hayes joined Stax Records in 1964, and his first gig was as a pianist for Otis Redding. As a [...]

Hump Day Slow Jam of the Week: Dionne Warwick, "Heartbreaker" The Singer: Dionne Warwick is best known for her mid-'60s work with Burt Bacharach and Hal David ("Walk on By," "Anyone Who Had a Heart," etc.), but some of her best work came after she parted ways with the soft-touch duo. "Then Came You," her 1974 collaboration with the Spinners, is a slice of disco-funk heaven, and today's slow-jam, "Heartbreaker," is a standout even for a performer who made her name singing broken-heart songs. [...]
Part two is all about the soul. Three tracks sampled by the UT favourite J DIlla (and Common) . Dionne Warwick - You're Gonna Need Me Syreeta - Black Maybe Jerry Butler - Just Because I Really Love You

THE BOX TOPS: JOURNEY IN THE SHADOW OF THE MEMPHIS MAFIA Memphis Press-Scimitar Photo, Robert Tomb Collection If there were an "Around the World in Eighty Days" whirlwind dash for the most coveted cover of Burt Bacharach's & Hal David's pocket weepie, the prize handkerchief would have to go to these five boys from Memphis. Alex Chilton pulls out all the stops with a plaintive, raw vocal that nudges ahead of Dionne Warwick's distinctly cooler performance by a country [...]

Lesley Gore - Maybe I Know Lesley Gore - Sunshine Lollipops & Rainbows (from The Best of Lesley Gore ) Most recognized for her song "It's My Party" (and I'll cry if I want to…), the anthem of 16-year-old drama queens everywhere, Lesley Gore's voice is not particularly pleasing – it's a bit scratchy and piercing, much like a 16-year-old [...]
"Une autre, s'il te plaît. la même chose ? oui, merci"L'envie est toujours présente, à jamais la recherche de l'étourdissement, le désir de se faire péter le oreilles et le coeur, d'en prendre plein la gueule. Et de vous rendre, tant bien que mal, les secousses de cet écosystème personnel. Moins de posts cette année, mais plus de lecteurs au-delà des frontières : des timides, des réguliers, des

i missed my flight by 5 minutes. i knew it was pointless, but i pleaded with the stone-faced lady at the mexicana counter anyway for what felt long enough to qualify as a good attempt. the next flight was at 2am and by the time i stumbled out of customs in mexico city, carlos was already waiting for me at freedom café next to the arrival exit. he looked about as shitty as i felt, having gotten up 4 in the morning and drove an hour to the airport to [...]
Joy of Cooking is one of those groups I've heard about for years without knowing a single note of their music (like Nitty Gritty Dirt Band or Hawkwind ). A couple months ago, I got a copy of their 1970 self-titled debut album. I liked it very much and it was certainly not what I expected. Born in 1967, Joy of Cooking was the "house band" at Mandrake's in Berkeley, CA until they got a record deal. They were very much in the typical Bay Area groove of folk / rock [...]
The music world has lost a true pioneer. Phil Walden passed away on Sunday after a long battle with cancer. You may not recognize his name, but you do know the names of the artists that he helped build careers in the music business. Otis Redding...Al Green...Percy Sledge...Sam and Dave. And that's just the tip of the ice cube in your iced tea! Phil Walden founded Capricorn Records in 1969 in Macon, Georgia. That music label helped define a generation of southern rock bands like the [...]
