In May 2010 the world of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal lost one of its most gifted and fervent ambassadors, with the passing of Ronnie James Dio. In his position as lead vocalist for Rock giants such as Rainbow and Black Sabbath , as well as fronting his own eponymous band for nearly three decades, Dio created some of the genres most defining and respected works. Albums such as 'Holy Diver', 'Sacred Heart' and 'Last in Line' all stand as towering monuments of sheer class and brilliance in the Rock pantheon. Dio was also to pave the [...]

Bloodnstuff are metal by my ears. Big riffs, big drums, a strong unifying lead vocalist, all played together in a tight package and performed at breakneck speeds. They don't make you ride the tiger , but they will get that head banging just the same. They're making a ton of great noise for just two guys. Bloodnstuff is fresh out of the gate as far as bands go. They're currently working on financing and recording their first album ( and you can donate HERE ), and from all reports have been playing some [...]
In short: Yes, yes it is. We're not entirely sure why Dez Fafara (DevilDriver, Coal Chamber), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio), Rob "Blasko" Nicholson (Prong, Rob Zombie, Danzig, Ozzy Osbourne), and John Tempesta (White Zombie, Testament, The Cult) decided it would be a good idea to team up and cover 'Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer' (for the Metal Christmas album, We Wish You A Merry Xmas and a Headbanging New Year ). Neither are we quite sure whether or not the beyond OTT nature of the result in any way justifies the idea's inherent stupidity. [...]

Paranoid was the first Black Sabbath album I owned but Mob Rules was first Sab album I ever saw in a record store. Long before covers sported decaying bodies, Greg Hildebrandt's blood-spattered street thugs were terrifying. There was a glimmer of hope in all of Sabbath's early covers: Their debut hinted at the promise of occult power; the outline of Ozzy on Volume 4 oozed unbridled rock excess; Technical Ecstasy merged technological horror and wonder in one frame. There was nothing vague about Mob Rules : The message was [...]

Halloween Songs II: Night of the Dancing Dead Happy mother-truckin' Halloween readers! Last week we looked at the scarier side of Halloween music, but [...]

Words by Brendan Halloween is a strange holiday, when you think about it. For kids, it's that magical day when you can ask your neighbors for candy and they have to give you some! (Fuck that guy who gave you raisins.) For teens, it's that awkward day where you're too old to trick or treat but you're secretly jealous of kids and their candy so you make mischief and mayhem, instead. (Amiright?) For college students, it's an excuse to get drunk and dress ruhl slutty and get away with it, or an excuse to [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Dio - "Rock 'n' Roll Children" (video) . . . The mention of Dio's "Rock 'n' Roll Children" in yesterday's Sinister Realm interview led me to see if that song had a video. (For catching cultural Hail Marys, YouTube is unrivaled.) Sure enough, it did. For four and a half minutes, I was lost in the '80s, when music videos made on five-digit budgets aired on MTV only once. I must not have [...]

New Order - Crystal (LAKE R▲DIO Remix) ( mp3 ) ▲ ▲ ▲ ▲ ▲ ▲

Wanted to post this before going off on vacation but didn't for some reason, so here it is now. Caden Moore a.k.a. LAKE R▲DIO made this fine remix of New Order 's 2001 hit 'Crystal'. It starts out pretty chill but turns into a party jam halfway through. Now why did I give away my Get Ready CD? New Order - Crystal (LAKE R▲DIO remix) LAKE R▲DIO b▲ndc▲mp .

First it was on. And then it was off. Then someone said it might happen at some point. So what do all these on-again off-again Black Sabbath reunion rumours actually mean? We kicked Hugh Platt awake and demanded he bitch and moan about the subject for 1000-odd words. Bloody hell, Hugh, hurry up and get to [...]
If you've ever wanted to hear Dio's "Holy Diver" transformed from one of metal's most powerful anthems into a hair metal-style sad sack power ballad complete with Casio keyboards and a synth violin so shitty it wouldn't have been considered fit to be the ringtone on the cell phone you owned in 1999, then you [...]
News Martin Popoff of Goldmine magazine recently conducted an interview with Wendy Dio, the wife/manager of legendary heavy metal singer Ronnie James Dio.
Norwegian black metal is a genre whose history is fraught with controversy and full of murder and church burnings and all other manner of awfulness. So, naturally, Norway has now given twenty of its diplomats "a black metal crash course," according to this report: "The objective is to show Norwegian culture in all its diversity. [...]
When I heard about the Dream Theater-shaped hole in the life of drummer Mike Portnoy back in September, I wanted to pitch him on my long-gestating idea to form a killer Jellyfish cover band. I bet he'd be into it cuz of his Jellyfish super-fandom (he has cited 19932s Spilt Milk as a top ten favorite album); [...]
Here are five songs that I missed the first time around, but thanks to television, video games, and general pop culture, they found a way into my life (and into my heart). Dance Hall Days – Wang Chung One of the best songs from the Vice City soundtrack. The song makes absolutely no sense, though. Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) – Journey Another song I first heard in the 90s on a Beavis and Butt-Head [...]
Hellsongs pay tribute to metal legend Ronnie James Dio on the 1-year anniversary of his death. RIP.
And we can't believe you've been gone a year already. Metal can never replace you.
The Revolver Golden Gods Awards will air on VH1 later this month (or something... I know we got a press release but I was too lazy to read it), and it will be interesting to see that, because I was there, but I didn't actually see very much of the show. I saw the schmuck [...]
