Two mix tapes in one week? Why, you must be the luckiest children on all the Internet! This should be a busy and exciting week, as I'll be leaving in a few hours to cover the NAB Show in Vegas. If you don't know what NAB is, well, you're not alone. I didn't really know [...]

I seem to be finding all sorts of Red Dirt artists I have seemingly fucking failed to mention. It could be that some of them are just now putting out an album and it's been since before I started writing here that their last one came out but that's no damn excuse! I cannot believe that have never written anything about Bleu Edmondson on here. I first heard this guy when I was working as a karaoke jock at my local watering hole. We had a small crowd so I was spinning a bunch of Red Dirt Music when the [...]

Often an album sounds distinctly influenced by a certain artist, by a place the songs' writer has been, by the environment in which the music was written or recorded. Occasionally, these kinds of influencing factors come together in such a crystalline way that it can be said that a set of recordings was actually inspired by a specific event. It is the 2008 Festival of the Desert which looms over Dirtmusic's second album BKO, which is named after the acronym used to refer to Bamako airport in Mali, the country in which the Festival of the [...]

The Josh Grider Trio has departed from the traditional country album with Sweet Road to Ride. While there are some songs that would be immediately identified as country the band has added a groove to their sound that defies the purist sound that runs through the Red Dirt Music scene and it works. In Josh's own words "Everybody knows who Merle Haggard is, everybody knows who Dave Matthews is, so if you say we meet in the middle, that's kind of what's goin' on. It's got the boogie in it". While I am not sure about the Dave Matthews reference [...]

A South Korean company has received an order for the cloning of a pet dog from a woman in the United States. The procedure supposedly costs $150,000 and will carried out by a team of University experts. If successful, this could spark new debate about the pros and cons of cloning. Perhaps more importantly though, the cloning of a dog could prove to be valuable for Koreans (and other Asiatic cultures), as it will enable them to cheaply and effectively regenerate tasty dog meat for their various restaurants at home and abroad. See people, it's funny because Asians kill dogs [...]
Now that we're a month or so into the year (and barely into the Year of the Rat), I thought I'd share some of what my favorite Boston-area performers have planned for the rest of 2008. A few of those below put out great albums last year, others have new releases on deck, and most are hitting venues near or far in the coming months. This is by no means a list of all the nearby artists that count
