"It’s just two sides to the same coin so two different perspectives concerning the one same story. And when you see it that way... I dunno – there are so many ways to look at one thing, and it’s very sad that we like to put everything in little boxes and name them." Like it or in the case of Alex Zhang Hungtai loathe it, we're lumped with this monstrous modern-day predilection for compartmentalisation. Call it a reluctance to accept the unknown, or accredit it to a crippling fear of an unexplored other though that's the [...]
Alex Zhang Hungtai sounds like a broken man. Maybe he’s been betrayed one too many times. Maybe he sits in the dark a lot. “Greyhound at Night”, “Alone at the Danube River” — even the song titles reflect solitude. His lyrics are often unintelligible, obscured by a haze of tape hiss and reverb. On Drifters/Love is the Devil — a double album from his lo-fi solo project, Dirty Beaches — Hungtai continues to hide in cavernous distortion, both for pop songs and ambient pieces. Drifters collects the former and Love is the [...]

First off, there's no Scott and there's no Charlene in Scott and Charlene's Wedding. It's just NYC via Melbourne, Australia songwriter Craig Dermody. Also of note, Dermody is a slacker in the Malkmus tradition. On the surface it seems he ain't even tryin' - One can hear the chuckle of a man unprepared for the tape at the start of "Fakin' NYC," the guitars are conspicuously out of tune, and Dermody isn't particularly concerned with singing in key, either. Yet, and this is the take away, he has a gift for both melody and words. In its own [...]

On "Casino Lisboa," Dirty Beaches makes one of the dirtiest combinations of funk, post-punk and lo-fi muck imaginable. It feels like a nightmare set in a hellish club where everyone is dressed in leather and drinking brown fog. It's also oddly danceable – try to resist.
Madrid, Spain. (2011) Three new ones this week plus a big moves for Mood Rings and Saturday Looks Good To Me. The highest debutant is Dirty Beaches with his abrasive rocking ode to Lisbon, 'Casino Lisboa' in at 22. One of the masters of modern indie pop, Glasweigan sextet Camera Obscura have a new album, Desire Lines coming out early June and the gifted track 'Fifth In Line To The Throne' debuts at 24. That's a rare free download below folks. Free and legal mp3s are getting harder and harder [...]

Dirty Beaches is one of my favorite musicians at the moment. I don't think Alex will need my approval of positivity and Asian solidarity but I am going to give it to him anyways. Dirty Beaches has been on a wild ride since the critical acclaim and success from Badlands which came out in 2011. Now he will do something ambitious which the double album "Drifters/Love Is The Devil" which drops on May 21st through Zoo Music. Total of 16 tracks. Drifters with 8 tracks and Love Is The Devil with 8 [...]

Among all the new releases this week, it's hard to escape the one from Daft Punk . Their new album, Random Access Memories, is the first by the band in eight years. The 13-track record begins with a bang via its track "Give Life Back to Music", a funky, 702s-inspired song with trademark robot-style vocals. Shoulder-swaying and ethereal with strummed electric guitars, the song feels like an early Michael Jackson single mixed with the electronic auto-tuned Daft lyrics. Memories features guest artists like Pharrell Williams and The Strokes' Julian Casablancas. The new album from the [...]

Alex Zhang Hungtai’s latest double LP Drifters/Love Is A Devil is a more intimate and difficult listen than his last album Badlands. Casino Lisboa is one of the more accessible (relatively speaking) and standout tracks on Dirty Beaches latest effort. Watch its video below.
On the new double album Drifters/Love Is The Devil , Alex Zhang Hungtai's Dirty Beaches project pushes its combination of tense lo-fi noise and sweaty rockabilly beyond its logical conclusion, laying on the bad vibes incredibly thick. And the group's new video for the knife-edge throb " Casino Lisboa " has its own dark glamor to it. The video was shot in some Asian metropolis (Bangkok, I'm thinking), and it mixes footage of the Dirty Beaches live show with images of local breakdancers, strippers, and Muay Thai fighters. Watch it below. Read More... [...]
