Any excuse to post about Dirty Beaches, and this is certainly one. previously: Dirty Beaches - Lord Knows Best
This summer compilation from the good people at Night People Records can do no wrong. Label head Shawn Reed has always been a fantastic cobbler of digital samplers (See Cola Heavy Nights) but this latest crop of upcoming releases from the Iowa City label is its greatest yet. (Navy Seals didn't kill Osama, this comp did it. Unless lung cancer was the real patriot?) ![Albums of 2011: First quarter [Top 25]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3407220_lg.jpg)
Wow! The first four months has flown by so quickly. I really don't do this until the end of the year. But I think it would be cool to do my Top 25 albums that came out in the first quarter. (IE Winter month/Jan-April) Since May has begun, I shall list my favorite albums that came out in the first four months. You maybe shocked and surprised on the list. Letting you know, I don't count re-issues/re-releases. So here it is, the Top 25. (If I forgotten any albums that came out in the [...]

Going into Dirty Beaches' Thursday night show at the Echo, advanced assessments of Alex Zhung Hai's live performances had varied from high praise to bitter criticism. In our interview with the artist , he acknowledged this, saying, "I think it is a mixed reception. Some people really enjoy it, but others expect something traditional and are like 'where is your fucking drummer!? Where is your band?' They prefer that, and I don’t blame them. They are entitled to. They want to be more traditional." And if you have heard Badlands or seen Dirty Beaches live, it is [...]
Of shows big and small and in between: ► Dirty Beaches , whose spooky, minimalist synth-pop has gotten a lot of love in the blog world, visits the Echo, with Bell Gardens and Neverever supporting. That's the video for Dirty Beaches' "Lord Knows Best," above. ► Prince resumes his run of shows at the Forum. ► The Airborne Toxic Event continues its week of L.A. venue-hopping, tonight rocking the Music Box with Voxhaul Broadcast opening. ► Gardens & Villa , the Richard Swift-produced [...]

Here's a photo I snapped of Dirty Beaches (Alex Zhang-Huntai) at Cheer Up Charlie's during SXSW. Alex had just stepped off the stage to confront the audience, or at least remind us that he takes his music and fans seriously. I appreciated this part of the performance because so many bands tend to hide behind their mics. Dirty Beaches play The Echo Thursday, 4/28 with Bell Gardens [...]

Explosions in the Sky Play Hollywood Forever on Saturday I caught Geronimo Getty's (Aaron Kyle from Le Switch) first show at Labrie's last Tuesday. Good stuff. More country and folk songs compared to his songs with Le Switch. I also caught Prince on Friday. The show was honestly a little disappointing. There were moments of radness, but I didn't know a lot of the songs and he only played 17 songs. Looking at the setlists for the other shows, I think it was definitely the weak link. [...]

Sick of Sasquatch? Bored with Bumbershoot? Just want more more more? Here's North of Northwest's second annual guide to Canadian summer music festivals. Dawson City Music Festival July 15-17, Dawson City, Yukon I've never heard DCMF described as anything but an amazing experience, a weekend of performances, creativity, and collaboration in a place whose very name conjures [...]

With Taiwan born nomad Alex Zhang Hungtai aka Dirty Beaches ' 2011 album 'Badlands' it seems we have hit rock bottom in lo-fism. Deep&Edgy has called him Suicide-meets-Elvis, and that's really spot on. His stripped down, distorted take on rockabilly and 502s music/fashion will anger sonic purists I'm sure, but bar the repetition on some tracks, there are some really compositions here. You've already heard 'Sweet 172 probably, so why not give a try to the crooner 'Lord knows best' which really was the stand out track for me. Insound [...]

Pow Wow! at Cake Shop (10/22/09) Photo : Jon Klemm The summer concert announcements are coming at a fast and furious pace these days, tomorrow should bring us the full 2011 Summerstage schedule, but in the mean time, we've got the music highlights from River To River NYC today. The Seaport showcases the world’s top indie music stars with Sean Lennon ’s new band, Ghost of the Sabre-Tooth Tiger (June 24), Lower Dens and Dirty Beaches [...]
Dirty Beaches - Golden Desert Sun from Jacqueline Lachance on Vimeo. Dirty Beaches, Dirty Beaches, Dirty Beaches. Long and distant, a dusty little road tune featured as a single last year on the Italian Beach Babes label. Can we start calling this a Dirty Beaches fan site yet?
With most multi-day passes hovering around $200, festival going definitely isn't cheap. Add in airfare, gear, hotel/camping costs, plus the price of 4-days worth of chicken pita, and attending more than one summer extravaganza seems daunting if not impossible. So North By Northeast 's (NXNE) $50 5-day 'Music' wristbands and $150 early bird 'Priority Pass' seem like a steal, considering the festival boasts 600 international bands performing across 50 venues in beautiful Toronto. Pattered after Austin's South By Southwest, NXNE is comprised of an interactive, film, and music segment, with various workshops, panels, and activities taking place over [...]

Alex Zhang Hungtai, aka Dirty Beaches channels his music through a cattle chute of nostalgia. Born in Taiwan, but never having a settle home, Hungtai moved around for most of his life due to a separated family. Five years ago, he moved to Montreal to pursue his solo efforts after being fired from a metal [...]

MIX: Dirty Beaches - City Life Rose Quartz Mixtape (43mb) We've been fans of Alex Zhang Hungtai's Dirty Beaches for a while now but it hasn't been until Badlands that his low-lit, blues inspired highway rockers and romantic swayers have found such perfect form. I interviewed him recently for an upcoming Altered Zones feature which made me further interested in his listening habits; sure there are the overt Lynch/Jarmusch evocations across his filmic ballads as well as just total Everly Brothers old-fashioned heart, but the Vincent Gallo oddities, Sun [...]
