Lo-fi musician Dirty Beaches has revealed he's set to release two albums this year. The Taiwanese-born Canadian-based musician has revealed plans 2011 effort Badlands with a duo of releases, the first being a LP entitled Drifters. That record is currently being mixed, while a more instrumental offering is also in the works for later this year. Both albums are due to be put out by San Diego imprint Zoo Music.
Dead Luke returns! This time with a slow burner of a psych-jam that feels akin to the faded crushed velvet paintings of our collective youth. It feels like Dirty Beaches, from the "Slow Ride" days, got in with the bad kids from across the tracks, smoked a few too many happy sticks and decided to [...]
The self-made video for Dirty Beaches' "Neon Gods & Funeral Strippers" delivers a non-narrative array of complementary and often quite striking sequences whose relationships with the track is as completely interpretive as they are to each other. With the video collage having been the music video format of choice for so many artists seeking to create an impactful piece on their own and on the cheap, it's easy to forget that the tie between film montage and psychedelia is far from arbitrary; they share a conceptual tie that precedes the advent of either film or the electric guitar. This video [...]
Dirty Beaches , U.S.

Dirty Beaches, "Sweet 17 (live in studio)"

Picked from the same basket although hatched from a very different egg to Alex Zhang Hungtai's contribution to Kingfisher Bluez' Single-Sided Singles Series: Vancouver DIY comes this putrid blitz of glitchy menace, courtesy of Jamie Stewart. The man's been darn prolific thus far this year under the guise of Xiu Xiu , outing the unconventionally breathtaking Always , getting back down to business with Italian vanguardists Larsen , and indeed even hooking up with Hungtai for a Record Store Day split . However none of that [...]

Welcome to the second edition of the 405 'Staff Recommender'. With a support team of over 100 writers, a sizeable editorial team, a lot of talented photographers and a cat, The 405 family is quite large these days. With that in mind, we thought we'd give them a monthly column to talk about the things they've been enjoying recently. The number of submissions may vary from month to month (depending on time) - but hopefully you'll find something here to enjoy. Main photo and dividers by [...]

Is mijn stereo kapot?

"You are the music while the music lasts." -T.S. Eliot Boyfrndz - "Hear Say" Chugging guitars swell into noisy crashes on the latest track from Boyfrndz’ upcoming debut LP, All Day Pass (set to be self-released on September 11th). The Austin trio recorded the album live in the studio, and “Hear Say” crackles with spontaneous energy, whether its Aaron Perez’ jittery drumming or Scott Martin’s all-over-the-place fretwork. Think early Jane’s Addiction: there’s spacey vocals and tinges of psychedelia, but it’s all thrown at the listener in [...]
