The Dirty Dozen Brass Band performs this evening as part of the Wednesday at the Square concert series put on by the Young Leadership Council. Breton Sound is the opening act at 5 PM. The Dirty Dozen have been innovators on the New Orleans brass band scene since the 1970s. Each album takes the band in a new direction including legendary collaborations like jazz stars Dizzy Gillespie and Danny Barker and pop sensations like Elvis Costello and Widespread Panic. Their latest effort, Twenty Dozen , was highlighted in a recent [...]
This past Saturday at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Warren Haynes Band took over a set that was originally supposed to feature the Levon Helm Band. Warren paid tribute to the late The Band drummer by closing his guest-laden set with a cover of The Weight. Joining Haynes and his band for this fantastic rendition were New Orleans musical royalty Dr. John, Ivan Neville and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band's Roger Lewis, Kevin Harris and Efrem Towns. Check it out... Warren Haynes Band w/ Guests - The Weight

Poi Dog Pondering with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band : Mele Kalikimaka [ purchase ] I must apologize to one of our readers, who sent me an e-mail to request T-Bone Burnett's version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen during our Offbeat Holiday Music week. I did not post it then because I knew that it would fit this week's theme better. But I'm not posting it now either, because the album it comes from, Acoustic Christmas, has another song I wanted to post more: Mele Kalikimaka. The song was written [...]
The onboard programming schedule for Jam Cruise was just posted. Dirty Dozen kicks off the kick-off party and it's basically music nonstop from there on out. Our very good buddy @PeteLikesMusic will be on the boat with the usual players and suspects (like Scotty B. from Hidden Track)... We'll be following along from the comfort [...]
Check out Tinariwen this weekend at Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin and then plenty of other dates this fall/winter...
A special thanks to Erika Goldring for sharing her photos with us When esteemed actors have been around the game too long, they tend to make horrendous films together (see Grown Ups, Wild Hogs, anything Ice Cube has been up to as of late). But when road-tested musicians Bill Kreutzmann, Papa Mali, George Porter Jr., [...]

Tinariwen is the music of Tuareg rebellion, displacement and the pain of not only being far from home but knowing you don't truly have one. The word literally means "deserts." It was created when the Saharan nomads escaping difficult conditions in Mali joined Gaddafi's military camps in Libya in the 1980s. It was there they discovered American blues and made it part of the fabric of their music, sometimes called "desert blues." (It's not too often a crazed fugitive dictator can take some of the credit for generating a musical movement). The music is also known as "asuf," a term from the Tamashek language [...]

Dave Matthews Band Caravan @ Lakeside Chicago - July 8-10 The Dave Matthews Band's roving music festival Caravan made its second stop at Chicago's Lakeside on July 8 - 10. The festival featured 38 bands spread over three days and three stages, and the Dave Matthews Band (DMB) closed out each night with three-hour performances. For DMB fans I am sure the experience was heavenly; as for the rest of us Caravan was exhausting, yet it had its perks. I was drawn to Caravan for primarily two reasons: The Flaming Lips were performing The [...]
They promised us a view. Specifically, the Dave Matthews Band Caravan 's own website promised us that from Lakeside, "the panoramic vista of downtown Chicago across the water will provide a stunning backdrop for the festivities." Instead, we got a panoramic view of security fencing and a grubby, toe-stubbing festival ground littered with broken bricks, shards of metal and glass, and a covering of wood chips that were apparently meant to improve conditions but instead lent the entire place a hamster-cage like feeling. It seems that this site of a former steel plant needs some further TLC before it [...]
World music can be a hard sell to the indie crowd, but Tuareg collective Tinariwen has an idea. The Saharan band has collaborated with a few recognizable American names for its upcoming fifth studio album. Out August 30th on ANTI- Records , the followup to 20092s Imidiwan: Companions is titled Tassili . The band brought in some special guests to record the full-length - that is, somewhere in the southeastern Algerian Desert - including TV on the Radio vocalists Tunde Adebimpe and Kyp Malone. Dirty Dozen Brass Band handled the horn section [...]

Jam Cruise 10 sets sail from Ft. Lauderdale, FL on January 9 aboard the MSC Poesia and will visit Labadee, Haiti and Falmouth, Jamaica before returning to Ft. Lauderdale on January 14. Over the first nine Jam Cruises a number of artists have proven themselves to be ideal performers for the community-oriented vibe of the trip. Jam Cruise 102s lineup brings nearly all of those acts back to the open seas including HT faves Umphrey's McGee, Galactic, Soulive, Perpetual Groove, The New Mastersounds, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and Railroad Earth. The music portion of Austin's annual South by Southwest Festival officially begins Wednesday, March 16, 2011 With Foburg only days behind us, its older, larger, captain-of-the-varsity-footbal l-team brother, Austin's annual South by Southwest Festival, will be officially underway in a matter of hours. For all the adventurous New Orleans cats willing to take the drive/flight to Texas, the experience can be at best completely overwhelming and at worst something akin to a hipster Apocalypse Now . Though we'd all love to see the Strokes show from Levi's or the Kanye and Radiohead secret shows, let's [...]

Hi there. I've got another album to get you in the holiday spirit. I know. It's so annoying isn't it. I don't care. You're going to wish so hard you were in a cabin in the mountains in front of a fire. You will wish it and you will like it! And if you still resist, then you're going to buy it for your cubemate or flatmate or cousin who unexpectedly is showing up this year. And they will like it. [...]

For the 22nd year in a row, the Warren Haynes Christmas Jam returned to the guitarist's hometown of Asheville, NC last night with this year's event taking place at the Asheville Civic Center. Yesterday's event saw the debut of the Warren Haynes Band and sets from Missing Cats featuring JoJo Hermann and Sherman Ewing, prog-jammers Umphrey's McGee, classic rockers the Steve Miller Band, Widespread Panic frontman John Bell, the Gregg Allman Band and a late-night thrown down from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Get this one as a gift for yourself and anyone else who loves good music.
Here's a typical conversation I had this week: Me: "I'm reviewing Norah Jones this week." Random Friend: "My mom likes Norah Jones." It doesn't sound much like an insult, because there are no harsh words or explicit judgments passed. Instead, rather underhandedly, people place themselves above an artist by defining them as an entity that sees heavy rotation in their mother's limited CD collection, the collection of a woman who, while loved and respected, surely has inferior taste in music. It's with Jones' newest release, ...Featuring Norah Jones , a compilation album [...]
