its summer, and i cant constantly be listening to shit that half makes me want to curl up in a ball and drink away the day. no, sometimes i need something that feels good to the soul, and good the ears. portland, oregon's dirty mittens are currently filling that deep dark hole with their blend upbeat and sunny pop with a little bit of r&b thrown in to make it a bit more interesting. its kinda like pop music for the morning after. eyes are blurry, coffee's brewing, pop a couple of advil, plop down on the couch, [...]

After Margie's, the drive today feels like it takes no time at all. Either that or we go through some kind of time warp by the Winchester Mystery House and the drive literally takes no time at all. Oh San Francisco, oh you city of swells and smells. Everything is on top of itself here, buildings and freeways and people all piled up into incredible piles, and my memories seem to pile up the same way, jumbled. More meat than I've eaten in years—an incredible sausage in Lower Haight and later, home-made wild boar tacos. A shot of [...]

This city is huge. It stretches forever. From the top of this hill, I can see maybe 220 degrees of solid sprawl, and I know behind me is another 140. Stayed with the illustrious Adam Stamp last night, and he lives a block from the bottom of Runyon Canyon park, where supposedly the stars are to be seen, so I head up to see what I can. I'm pretty sure I see Mark Duplass doing pushups, but I'm not entirely sure. Then I take a nap and a shower and it is awesome. At 4, we [...]

Eating Dicks has been our go-to unfunny joke since Patrick and Paul bailed on a night of drinking in favor of hamburgers and sleep. How much Dicks can they eat? Five. They eat five Dicks between the two of them. Seattle was awesome. Weird show at the Vera project, but AWESOME bands. Strong Killings have incredible energy and bring it hard. Ships are, in addition to prolific drinkers, rock solid dudes, and a fantastic band. Such pop hooks! We drink too much, and have adventures of a questionable variety which I'll not discuss here. [...]

It's gonna be awful, I keep telling myself—managing expectations. We will sleep on hard floors and eat bad food. What shows aren't canceled will be for five people in a rec center basement and we won't be paid. We will get robbed, beaten up, snowed in, pulled over, and made fun of. When we finally pull into Portland two weeks from now, it will be beaten and ragged Mittens that emerge from a fully fucked, broke-ass van. I repeat this to myself like a litany, "This is gonna suck, this is gonna suck, this is gonna suck," for [...]

From the beginning, Dirty Mittens always sounded good. The band—led by singer (and, for the record, ex- WW intern) Chelsea Morrissey—has evolved over the years, from its humble beginnings as a cutesy indie-pop quartet to its current incarnation as a retro soul-pop powerhouse. But rarely—in concert, or even on record—has the group sounded this good playing the handclap jam "Arcadia." Once again the amazing I nto the Woods dudes capture a fantastic performance (here at the old Masonic temple in North Portland where Dirty Mittens recorded its upcoming full-length), but this time it's most [...]

Everyone knows that the record industry is dying a slow, painful death. The problem is that no one has a solution. While the Radiohead "pay as much as you want" model might work for bigger bands, it certainly can't help young, developing outfits that don't have the same established fan base. Nowadays artists have to find a way to sell something more than a tangible, physical album, and it's led to a lot of out-of-the-box thinking to move units. Yet, despite all the fear mongering, there's one positive sign: as record sales continue to drag, more and more bands are [...]

No April Fools' Day jokes here, folks: we have a second Cut of the Day! Ben Hubbird of Dirty Mittens just sent over a demo of the song "Arcadia" from the band's upcoming debut full-length record, and it's a pure gem. Recorded by Jim Brunberg at the Temple and the Falcon and featuring Laura Gibson and Matt Sheehy on backup vocals , "Arcadia" is a bit of a shift from Dirty Mittens' recent Motown-influenced sound, but no less infectious. Though the guest stars are sure to snag some of the attention, this is clearly singer [...]

The penultimate entry in my list of favourite albums released throughout the noughties is the debut offering from the Fleet Foxes. At first, I had avoided the band because they'd been the subject of a bit too much hype in the music press and online. I imagined that they were just another cool indie band, although this was before I had actually heard any of their music. Fortunately, I was pleasantly surprised when I got around to listening to them. The first song I heard was White Winter Hymnal and it encapsulates a lot of what the band [...]
The Thermals ::: Photo by Josh Lovseth, originally for Stereogum The Thermals have been good to Seattle this year, and we've been good back, and it's not even over yet. Straight from working in the studio with Chris Walla (who's name seems to be coming up everywhere lately), the tireless threesome is making a weekend of [...]

PDX Pop Now! Festival is a nice, free weekend thing that's beginning to shape up as a showcase for the best Portland has to offer, music-wise. Is it too early to call the festival a city insituition? Even if you wouldn't, it's definitely on the same level as the Willamette Week's NW MusicFest, given it's DIY 'tude, the limitations of only having local bands and keeping the cost free. Over a stretch from July 24 - 26, beginning Friday afternoon and ending early Monday morning, nearly 50 local bands will decend on Rotture for what looks like a rowdy [...]

Super Furry Animals - "Inaugural Trams" I want to believe that this song exists because at least one member of the Super Furry Animals became obsessed with the word "trams," and went out of his way to make sure that he could have the opportunity to say "trams" over and over in a song. Obviously, the sorta Krautrock vibe and campy German language interlude from Franz Ferdinand's Nick McCarthy just came out of the tram concept - when we think of trains in music, it's got to be a tribute to Deutschland, right? Of course! Still, I [...]
