Rating: 3 out of 5 stars When Dirty on Purpose broke up, I was a bit saddened, thinking I'd never get to hear their blend of sharp-edged indie pop again. Luckily, Doug Marvin and his wife, Annie of Au Revoir Simone , had other thoughts in mind, forming Pursesnatchers at home in their bedroom. They've since fleshed out a full band and completed A Pattern Language , giving all the old DoP fans something to hold onto. "Forever Ahead" [...]

I'm going to say right now, but one of my favorite records so far this summer has been the advance I got of Pursesnatchers , the group comprised of members of Dirty on Purpose and Au Revoir Simone. The combination of gentle melody and explosive indie rock moments. The rising tides in the songs, much like those in the album, take you on a journey where you're sure to get your money's worth. Their new record, A Pattern Language , will be coming out on July [...]

I've been aware of this band for some time now, anxiously awaiting the chance to introduce them to you. Pursesnatchers began as the project of Doug from Dirty on Purpose , who I loved, but soon his wife Annie from Au Revoir Simone joined in to round out the project. The band releases its debut, A Pattern Language on Uninhabitable Mansions July 19th, which based on this first single is going to be every bit as exciting as I hoped. It features the [...]

What happens when you mix together Dirty on Purpose and Au Revoir Simone ? You get Pursesnatchers . Doug Marvin of Dirty on Purpose and his wife Annie Hart of Au Revoir Simone home-recorded the album To Feet of Snow . They then recruited their friends Jared Barron and Harold Liu to round out the lineup and started playing out. The band is set to release its first album as a full band, A Pattern Language via the Uninhabitable Mansion collective on July 19. [...]

MP3 : Baseball on the Radio I was big fans of Dirty on Purpose back in the day. I helped book a few of their shows and they stayed in our house in Columbus a few times while they were on tour. When they broke up, I was sad. No joke. But now here we are, with a new album from DoP alum Doug Marvin's new band Pursesnatchers which also features his wife, Au Revoire Simone's Annie Hart. Jared Barron and Harold Liu are in the band, too. If this first song is [...]

In light of all the great new music I talked about so far in 2010 (and yesterday), here's a post of decidedly older tracks that I've either discovered or re-discovered or fallen in love with this calendar year, even if they were produced by the artists some time ago. It's always nice to find hidden gems in the recent past even while keeping up with the joys of such a great new music year like this. Download Arcade Fire - "Cars and Telephones".mp3 [...]

I really, really hate morning glory vine. It's the bane of my existence. Well, it's the bane of my gardening existence at any rate. It's invasive and insidious and I can't keep up with it. I think it's all connected to one giant root that's living under my house, so no amount of weeding can conquer it. (Oh my god, I'm right!! ) And with all the rain we've been having, it's multiplying so fast that I can practically see it growing before my eyes! [...]

David Magnusson It seems rather fitting that the first post of this new year should be devoted to an artist who seems to have great difficulty in choosing a favourite year, musically speaking, so he's opted to go with them all. Montt Mardié is the stage name of David Olof Peter Pagmar, a Swedish pop savant whose two albums - the 2005 debut Drama and the 2007 double-set Pretender/Clocks - were cherry-picked last year for the UK release Introducing... The Best Of [...]
As I sit here typing this, with 2008 shedding its final hours, Brooklyn foursome Dirty on Purpose are playing their last-ever show a couple hundred miles south at NYC's Mercury Lounge. As we say goodbye to a year, they say goodbye to their band, moving on to other projects, but leaving behind an album and a few EPs full of many good songs, and several truly great ones. I caught what would be

So here's my list of best singles, album tracks, and EPs from 2008. Unlike my Best Albums List, songs that were from a 2007 album but were released as singles in 2008 are eligible. But single reissues are not. (Which is why Friendly Fires and Pacific are absent from my list.) With the concept of the "album" diminishing in this world of digital downloads, singles are becoming more important. I'm not calling the death knell for the Album, but if groups whose music leans toward the poppy and immediate side of things wanted to just release singles or EPs every [...]

Aubrey Edwards Never have I claimed to be the fastest to get turned on to something, to be the one who discovers the next big thing. I'm far more tortoise than hare in these sorts of matters, but even then there's not really any excuse for taking, oh, seventeen months to get around to writing up Bishop Allen's last album The Broken String - or even longer if you think back to the year-long "one EP a month" series in 2006 from which much of the album is taken. [...]
Come 2009, there will be one less group floating around the strange, but forever vibrant Brooklyn music scene. Dirty on Purpose have announced that effective January 1, 2009, the four-piece, shoegaze-friendly outfit will be no more, ending a six year existence highlighted by one full-length album, 2006's Hallelujah Sirens , three EPs, and a slew of tour dates with some of music's biggest names. We got back from tour about a month ago and sat down to talk about recording another record, and realized we didn't really want to record another record. Not [...]
Dirty on Purpose (who have been interviewed by me) will be playing a "farewell show" with A Place To Bury Strangers (who have yet to answer my interview questions) on New Year's Eve at Mercury Lounge, NYC. From the DOP camp: "We got back from tour about a month ago and sat down to talk about recording another record, and realized we didn't really want to record another record. Not now anyway. So
Dirty On Purpose will not be joining us in 2009; they're calling it a day on New Year's Eve : After six years of spending an unhealthy and unusual amount of time together, Dirty on Purpose is going the way of the dodo. We got back from tour about a month ago and sat down to talk about recording another record, and realized we didn't really want to record another record. Not now anyway. So we're going our separate ways. Our best friends and practice space sharers of many years, A Place to Bury Strangers, offered us [...]

>> We join the chorus of outlets expressing disappointment at the breakup of Brooklyn-based nu-gaze superlatives Dirty On Purpose , who disclosed their demise via presser this afternoon. The quartet, which formed in 2002, will play a final show on New Years Eve at Manhattan's Mercury Lounge, where it will open for the purportedly "loudest band in New York," noiseniks-in-arms A Place To Bury Strangers . According to the statement, the band returned from tour a month ago, discussed making another record, and ultimately decided that was something it didn't want to [...]

On New Year's Eve, Dirty on Purpose will play their farewell show with close friends, A Place To Bury Strangers , at Mercury Lounge in New York City. The Strangers have been their friends and fellow Death By Audio dwellers for years now and Mercury Lounge is where the band played their first big sold out show back in 2003 with the Decemberists . A personal message from Dirty on Purpose: Hello friends, After six years of spending an unhealthy and unusual amount of [...]
