The preview to the Dirty Projectors' film "Hi Custodian" was shown last night as a little treat as part of an companion to last night's performance of "Gun Has No Trigger." Be on the lookout for the upcoming DP album, "Swing Lo Magellan" via Domino Records next month. Guitar noodling and three part harmonies are as almost as a sure thing on the latest offering as much as the Colorado Rockies are going to end up dead last in the NL West. Oh, and that film we were talking about, look for it [...]
First up... Avi Buffalo :: What's It In For I never really got to talk about Avi Buffalo on here for one reason or another, but here's a big one! With their freshmen (and they're actually about to be freshmen in college... that's how young they are) try just out on Sub Pop, they are starting to make the splash they deserve. They just put this color saturated video out for their song "What's It in For." You've got some cool cgi flowers sprouting to match the [...]
Well, here it is, now pulling into the station... the caboose at the very end of the too-long train of "best of 2009" music blogger posts, three weeks into the new one. And, as ever, it most certainly is not a "best of", but simply a "my favorites" - the albums that soundtracked my own personal year. But you knew that.I've said it before, and I'll say it one last time for emphasis: My 2009,

The end of the decade is nearing a close as we here at The Yellow Stereo present to you our favorite albums of 2009. Even though we haven't been around since the start of the decade, I want to say on my behalf that it's been an absolute joy doing running this blog for you guys for at least the past three or so years. Hopefully, we can ride this ship far into the years that are yet to come. Joining the usual crew this year were (Pablo and Val) were two new writers, Nathan and [...]

At the beginning of the year I unleashed an article unlike anything I had ever written for this site before. Titled, " The 9's Have It: Historical Reasoning Why 2009 Will Be A Great Year for Music ", I detailed the history of the last year of the decade and its overall affect on the pop culture we would experience well into the next decade. Well 2009 hasn't really disappointed at all, at least when it comes to the music. Sure, we don't know exactly where we'll be 10-years from now but if you look at [...]

Those of you out there who actually read this blog from time to time know that 2009 was a momentous year in my life. My wife gave birth to healthy, beautiful (if I do say so myself) twin girls back in February, and though there are a thousand things to worry about every day with children, my life has been on the proverbial 9th cloud ever since. One of the many wonderful things about them is that they are amazing sleepers - seriously, they’re in bed at 7 every night and only on the rarest of [...]

Sarah Cass There's not much question that Bitte Orca , the latest record from Brooklyn's Dirty Projectors , is one of the most feted records of the year - the critical math says so and so do a goodly number of people whose tastes I respect and frequently align with my own. And as such, I've put more time than I might normally into the record, seeking a point of ingress to understanding and appreciating what everyone else seems to get but which I don't. And I think [...]

Who : Maximo Park When : September 21st Where : Webster Hall On Sale : Noon More Dates Thoughts : Maximo Park are a huge band. They have sold hundreds of thousands of records and sold out venues across the world. Yet for some reason I honestly cannot place the sound of a single Maximo Park [...]
Man, I've been listening to the Dirty Projectors for years now - ever since Owen Pallett suggested them to me after a Final Fantasy show in 2006 - but 2009 is the year that they completely hijacked my brain. I still don't have anything on Amrit's fandom, but they're far and away one of my [...]

David Byrne and the Dirty Projectors collaborated on the track "Knotty Pine" for the Dark Was The Night compilation released earlier this year. It turns out it wasn't the only track that came out of the session. Byrne posted a second, "Ambulance Man," on David Byrne radio and performed the song at the Dark Was The Night concert. The song's a duet of sorts with Byrne and David Longstreth--an oddly fitting combination. Thank JP's blog for the find.
David Byrne and Dirty Projectors originally worked on this track on the "Dark Was the Night" sessions. It is a slow-burning track that features David Byrne and Dave Longstreth on vocals. The track ends abruptly just at it seems to culminate. The track was posted on David... Click the link to read more
Living Thing, the fifth album from Peter Bjorn And John, is a strong indication that the acute pop minds behind 2006 breakthrough record Writer's Block have much more to give. Despite its spare arrangements and instrumentation, Living Thing incorporates fuller melodies and more intricate sounds, ranging from dub to a sort of Merseybeat gone electro. Peter Bjorn [...]

The album art for Bitte Orca , the Dirty Projectors' upcoming fifth album, shows band members Amber Coffman and Angel Deradoorian, their faces painted over in connecting red and blue circles. It harks back to the cover of Slaves' Graves & Ballads , the band's 2004 release, which some consider to be their strongest to date. But it also seems to hint at the enhanced prominence of the band's female members, who joined the Dave Longstreth founded and fronted group around late 2006, early 2007. [...]

Wildflowers Check it out! Today I'm just showing off my wildflower photos, but this photo gallery is going to help me get my concert reviews up faster, and I'll be able to display more photos without overwhelming [...]

OK, so I may not be THE next best thing to being there, but it's a great mix of music from some wonderful talent... all in one place... yours to keep... for FREE! We've covered quite a few bands that will be heading to this week, but not even close to half of them. Not even close to a quarter of them even. Hell, probably not even close to a quarter of a quarter of a quarter of them. I was just looking over the schedule [...]

You know how people that have terrible taste in music buy those “NOW, That’s What I Call Music!” compilations and think they’re incredible? Well, those people are really dumb. There are tons of reasons why, but my favorite is that it would be a lot cheaper to just turn on the radio and hear those terrible songs for free. Well, now the Brothers Dessner from The National have finally co-produced a compilation that indie music fans can get excited about. It was released a few weeks ago on 4AD records and I’ve been letting it simmer in my [...]
