Rose, where have you been all our lives? This is the sound of January 16th, 2012. "Hanging Around" is excerpted here from Ms. Dougall's (who is a former member of Brit buzz band The Pipettes) just released "Distractions" EP. The EP's got an interesting mix of sounds of influences, particularly its blend of classic American pop and more far off shoegaze tones. So we're definitely listening now, and we're eager to hear more. To the bandcamp links: Hanging Around by Rose Elinor Dougall Rose Elinor Dougall [...]

For many people, 2012 arrives with much uncertainty. But one thing we can pretty much always look forward to is music. There will be great music that gets a lot of buzz, and other terrific music that, for the most part, flies under the radar. There will be the predictable hype of new albums by [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

After having a remarkable tour with fellow Black Star artist Mos Def , Talib Kweli announces he'll be releasing an album entitled Prisoner Of Conscious . As a preview of what's to come, Kweli debuted the video for his single Distractions . In a heart felt message Talib explains the concept of Distractions to his fans: "A little less a year ago, I got a beat from one of my favorite producers, Oh No, that I felt would be [...]

"A little less a year ago, I got a beat from one of my favorite producers, Oh No, that I felt would be a perfect sound bed for the album I was working on, Prisoner Of Conscious. As I played the beat over and over trying to [...]
Talib Kweli dropped off the audio to his recent Oh No produced single, " Distractions ". To keep things moving, we now have politically driven visuals to complement the track. Along with the video, it has also come to my attention that Kweli is not going to be dropping his upcoming album through Warner Bros. Records, but rather EMI. That album, by the way, is called Prisoner of Conscious and it will be available in early 2012 via Blacksmith/EMI. Hit the skip to watch the video.
When dealing with a sound as sweet as San Francisco power pop band, Terry Malts, there's always the danger of an overdose. It's just so simple - guitar, bass, and drums, a dash of disenchantment and a boot to the back of the tempo; The references are spotless - Take the Ramones or the Buzzcocks and add the buzz and blur of UK post-punk guitars; And, the hooks are so immediate they work their way into your head in no time. Between their two singles released on Slumberland ( "I'm Neurotic" and " Something About [...]
Video: Fionn Regan, "List of Distractions" In which Fionn Regan plucks out another delicate tune off his third record, 100 Acres of Sycamore , in London's Hampstead Heath park, following September's Leonard Cohen/Bert Jansch-inspired title track with "List of Distractions," a subtly melodic cut that recalls his debut LP a bit (e.g. "Be Good or Be Gone"). Above, watch Regan set the steel-string aside for a classical guitar take filmed on the last day of summer.

Thin Hymns Experimental pop outfit Thin Hymns have returned this fall with its first full-band EP Logic & Theory . Thin Hymns mastermind Michael Hilger recruited friends Justin Fernandez of Distractions (bass) Roommate's Seth Vanek (drums), and Pillars and Tongue's Ben Babbit (synthesizers) to create an atmospheric folk pop record that is as gentle as it is twinkling with darkness. The self-titled track is reminiscent of Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme's side project Desert Sessions in that Thin Hymns utilizes similar unconventional tones [...]

Surely we all love the satisfying "pling" of earning a trophy, especially when it's that all important platinum, right? Well no, apparently not, there are some people out there who don't like trophies! "Why?!" I hear you gasp, well actually, they may have a very good point. There are people out there, commonly known as "trophy whores" who will buy rubbish (and easy) games, just in order to plat them or get their gamer-score up. Not only are they funding bad games that should never have been released [...]

Rockstar Kush Comments: Rockstar (aka Rockstar Kush) is one of my favourite strains for true medical qualities. Opening the container released a thick peppery smell and cracking the nugs really release the skunky and kushy tones. Beyond such an inviting smell, a great coating of trichomes from thin (perfectly snappable!) stems to the tip of the (2.5g max) buds leave a some sticky resin on your fingers and make rolling a dream. This batch is a bit lighter in colour than last year, but it still screams dank indica.

Scroobius Pip's work with Dan Le Sac has produced some of the finest hip hop of the past 10 years but listening to Pip's 2007 debut "No Commercial Breaks" often left me wondering what the end product would be like if he were to vary up the producers behind the desk once more. Well, I need wonder no longer as his second solo outing "Distraction Pieces" has arrived. With a mini whirlwind of hype surrounding debut single "Introdiction" , the bar was set high and second single "Let Em Come" maintained the [...]
Four years since 'Thou Shalt Always Kill' catapulted him and his cohort into the mainstream, Scroobius Pip returns this year sans Dan le Sac to deliver a poetic collection of hip hop abstractions under the apt title of Distraction Pieces . Listening to Pip's lyrics on this solo venture produces an image of a beat poet burning money on a street corner in the hopes of waking his fellow man from the paralysis of everyday life. The playfully satirical prose of his earlier work is replaced by a more confrontational and damning rhetoric that cuts deep from the very [...]
![Scroobius Pip – Distraction Pieces [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3747681_lg.jpg)
My first experience of Scroobius Pip came a few years back when I stumbled in on a live show. Upon Scroobius Pip reciting his first line, the crowd went from a buzzing mash of chattering heads to attendant silence within 30 seconds. Since that fateful day, I believe it was a Thursday, a nice day, I have been looking forward to his new noises with anticipation. First time round listening to the new album I was both impressed and also a little thrown by the new direction of production he has taken. A punk/hip hop fusion [...]

Scroobius Pip - Distraction Pieces By Ben Dufton "You a mousetrap; I see free cheese and a fucking challenge" I'm damned if I do and I'm damned if I don't with this review. Track five on Scroobius Pip's second solo album is called 'Death Of The Journalist' and it offers Pip's opinion on modern news reporting. Including music journalism. Ah. If you've heard any Pip before, then you'll have an idea of his views of the establishment. Well. Here goes. [...]
