Perhaps it's the unending desire to be outside when stuck at a desk all week, but I've been craving some music. Electronic. The kind that makes you walk slower or put your windows down as your screech around the winding, hot asphalt, and say "Hey weekend, you up to anything this weekend?" In the electronic spirit, we've thrown some remixes in with some very solid tracks, some of which have been out for a little bit but might have eluded your ears.. Before we got too deep, we want to bring attention to Memoryhouse , who remixed Tycho's [...]
My good friend thereisnogrey just blogged about a band close to Melon and my heart. Had to reblog: Division Day - “Reservoir” off Visitation

Division Day, "More Than This"

So, you all know Busdriver a/k/a Regan Farquhar has a new band featuring members of Mae Shi , Division Day , Silver Daggers , Hiking , The Little Ones , and Bad Dudes , right? Right. Physical Forms . Yes. Coming out today on lovely yellow vinyl via Polyvinyl Records is the Physical Forms split 73 with the Busdriver / Deerhoof collab which has branded Hoofdriver . If you missed it earlier, here is the mp3 of the Physical Forms [...]

The Little Ones have been laying low, dealing with what singer-guitarist Ed Reyes refers to as "trials and tribulations." But although recently separated from their second label, Chop Shop (which released their debut "Morning Tide" in 2008), the L.A. quintet continues continues to churn out its sunny pop. They are announcing the first installment of their "Endless Summer Series," a string of EPs on their own Branches Recordings imprint that Reyes hopes will one day add up to an album. "At this point," Reyes says, "it's kind of cool almost empowering ourselves to do things without a label." [...]
He is eight days from home and Carl Shapiro, namesake of DC-based Shapiro, can’t wait to get into his own bed. The 6-foot-2, lion-maned bassist has been sleeping in a 15-passenger van for the past month, on the road with his bandmates to spread their sound of piano-infused pop-rock with audiences in small clubs and venues all over the United States. Here is a look at the band's journey toward success and recognition.

I made it out to Aquarium Drunkard's No Jacket Required last weekend in Chinatown. Lord Huron played their first show ever and brought out a good, early crowd who were really into their Vampire Weekend/Fleet Foxes/Local Natives vibe. I'd been hearing a lot about John Carpenter and he didn't disappoint. There's a little bit of cognitive disonance between his look and sound - a preppy looking guy doing Craig Wedren-esque vocal gymnastics over a Cream-esque heavy blues sound. I would happily see him again. Monday 8/9/10 [...]

Division Day at Spaceland / photo by David Greenwald Didn't take pictures at this one, but a quick note: Division Day, 2009's Visitation behind them, played a short set in Origami Vinyl's loft on Friday night to shake off a few cobwebs. The synth-heavy band debuted a few new songs that evoked a lower-budget Atoms for Peace, with singer Rohner Segnitz's capable vox filling in for Thom Yorke's haunting croon and drummer Kevin Lenhart offering a one-man take on the Radiohead offshoot's percussion onslaught. The new stuff sounded promising, if a bit raw coming [...]

Good stuff this weekend: tonight , Rawkblog heroes Division Day will play a free gig at Origami Vinyl, where my RAWKSHOTS photos are still on sale; Saturday , Victoria Williams, The Chapin Sisters, Leslie Stevens of Leslie and the Badgers, Whispertown (Morgan Meyn), Red Cortez, The Tyde, Big Search (Matt Popieluch from Fool’s Gold and Foreign Born), comedienne extraordinaire Charlyne Yi and more are paying tribute to the Beach Boys for When You Awake 's Backyard Benefit at Historic Monument 157 for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund. More shows on the LA Tour Dates [...]

The Silverlake Jubilee arrives with a bang this weekend, the first-year music and arts festival bringing some 50 bands to a three-stage neighborhood fair featuring cutting-edge DJs, comedy, spoken word, film, art and fashion — not to mention three dozen or so food trucks to satiate attendees' appetites. Buzz Bands LA has joined with Jubilee organizers to co-present the indoor stage at El Cid on Saturday and Sunday night. Eastern Conference Champions — supported by Mississippi Man, Francisco the Man and Polls — headline on Saturday; Useless Keys [...]

The cold has well and truly smacked Canberra in the freaking face! The warm sun that graces us in the day is more than welcome in Autumn. Time for eating and sleeping and hot chocolate and being a boring hermit. Urgh, that's unlikely actually. I'll probably just go to Sydney a lot. Oh yeah, and I'm going to New York in July when it's going to be DEATH ICE COLD here. But here's a mix of low-key songs for when you're reading, buried under a blanket with a warm hottie (hot chocolate or person, that is). [...]
We Are the World has been earning raves for its kinetic dance music and its live visual spectacles. The band kicks off a three-week Thursday residency at the Echo to celebrate the release (next week) of its Manimal Vinyl debut "Clay Stones." ... Downstairs at the Echoplex, the Onion's "Our Big Dumb Book Event" boasts live music from Division Day and funny stuff from "Reno 911's" Tom Lennon and Ben Garant nad writer Megan Ganz . ... And Vancouver trio Yukon Blonde, whose trad-rock has been compared to Fleet Foxes and [...]

McCartney Plays Two Sold Out Shows at the Bowl Last week was an absolute feast while this week is a little bit of a famine. Spaceland should be hopping tonight with a free show from Warpaint and Dot Hacker. The Bowl will be nuts on Tuesday and Wednesday with McCartney. Division Day comes out of hibernation with a Thursday night Onion -sponsored show. Here's what I managed to catch last week: On Wednesday [...]

Photo by David Greenwald Best of '09 alumni Division Day Tweeted today that they're back in the studio. Working on a follow-up already? I'll keep you posted.

I realize I am down to the last minute for posting year-end favorites, but I am glad I didn't feel pressured to meet anyone else's deadlines because I would have regretted not including several that made this part of the list. For one thing, I was only recently alerted to the fact that Rural Alberta Advantage and The Airborne Toxic Event had re-released their 2008 albums that I did not get into until very late last year and early this year. For another, a couple of very fine late finds leaped onto the list to replace some other [...]

25. Caspian – Tertia Opening with a whisper and ending with a snarlingly epic conclusion. Perhaps the theme of the album is an ideal reflection of Caspian themselves, a band that insists on finding its own way and settles for nothing less than instrumental perfection. [Audio clip: view full post to listen] [mp3] Caspian - Of Foam and Wave from Tertia (2009) [...]
