This may owe a mighty debt to the Pixies (and the Strokes circa the turn of the century) but even the most ardent fan of that game changing 902s act would have to tip their hat to 'Let's Break Up The Band'. It comes from a 2 parts Canadian/1 part Mexican crew called Dizzy Eyes who have only 3 songs to their name to date in the shape of a 7-inch single, released last year. The a-side is terrific stuff, building a head of steam quickly before repeating the vibrant drama several times over. The cunning Hardly Art label took [...]

The 7-inch single has been around since 1949. That’s 62 years and counting! In my humble opinion the 7-inch single is still the essence, pinnacle and acme of pop perfection. Optimally, it’s one song, one side (Some try to squeeze on more). That’s no room for screwing up. You always hear that releasing a 7-inch is a money losing proposition, but that thankfully, doesn’t keep pop geeks from doing it. In honor of true blue pop geek vinyl junkies out there, here is the third installment of the annual Finest Kiss top 40 7-inch singles countdown. [...]

When I interviewed Shimmering Stars singer Rory McClure for the Georgia Straight , he advised me to listen to the Vancouver band Dizzy Eyes . It was a good tip, since "Let's Break Up the Band" is one of the catchiest tunes I've heard in ages. It's a sugary, noise-soaked stomper, but what really makes it great is the thrilling vocal performance of frontman Alejandro Constanzo. He's scarcely singing a melody, but his Jagger -esque ( ha! ) shouts ooze with charisma. This is the A-side of the [...]

How did I miss this glorious slice of rockandroll by the Vancouver trio Dizzy Eyes ? Well, in case you did also, here 'tis. "Let's break up the band! Let's go to the beach!" The song is a fist pumping, indierock strumming burst of joy. The band, signed to Hardly Art have a new three song single that you can pick up here . Hardly Art Records From: Seattle, United States Mention Seattle and record label to any music buff and the first words that will form in their head are Sub Pop. Well maybe not any more. Sub Pop founder Jonathan Poneman's Hardly Art are the name to drop amongst those in the know and with a roster that makes major labels green with envy, including the outrageous Hunx and his Punx featured earlier this week, it may not be long [...]
The S-25 Mix is short for The Sunday 25 Songs Mix, where we put together a mix of 25 tracks (sometimes more) we love from all genres and time periods of music. Over the past two weeks, we put out the Songs About Cars mixes, many of which were recommended by our readers. But this [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

It's summer! Well, actually the sky outside my window looks suspiciously white and cloudy, and I'm fairly sure the temperature will barely stray upwards of 10 degrees today. But the clocks went back yesterday, which means that the usual exhibitionists can strut shirtless around town until well into the evening, and more important, the flood of Summer Music can begin. And coincidentally (or not, perhaps this record companies are smarter than what they appear to me), the releases I've been enjoying this week are all perfect cider-in-the-park and bare legs. Colleen Green [...]

We've been super busy with SXSW, so a few things have slipped under the radar, and such is the case with Dizzy Eyes, one of the band's just signed by our friends over at Hardly Art. The band just released their new Let's Break Up the Band 73 last week, and I've been loving the lead title track. Vocals remind me of Stellastarr , yet there's a cutting melody that works beneath the entirety of the song, giving just enough bounce [...]

This is looking like Hardly Art week around here. I'm not on their payroll, but they do send me a CD now and again like the new La Sera record. If you hadn't heard, La Sera is one of the side projects of the Vivian Girl 's Katy Goodman (the other being All Saints Day) and holds to the current trend of that band's side projects being better than their recent records. Goodman wrote the songs in flurry and sent them off to her buddy Brady Hall here in Seattle where he laid down [...]
