After growing up surrounded by hip-hop, in my late teens I moved to a place where underground hip-hop heads were scarce, and I primarily had to rely on myself to find under-the-radar emcees and producers. Without much in the form of exterior stimulation, I used mixes as a way to listen closer to new musical finds. I made a number of mixes in the tape era, but with the first CD-burner I purchased in '98 or so, hip-hop mixes for myself became routine.
