Fresh Prince - Summertime.mp3 Somehow I survived this shit back in Texas with 110 temps when I was a child, but I got spoiled the last seven years living with central air ^-^ So, how do you do it? Hydrate. This may seem like it goes without saying, but people don't think about it. You need about 2 [...]

Halloween and horror inspire some great music. Here's a few of my very favorite spooky tunes to get you in the mood. No 'Thriller' here—just rockabilly-punks The Cramps , shoegaze-y EDM Frenchies M83 , composer for TV Milton DeLugg (covering TV composer Jack Marshall ), Def-Juxian Hip Hop beatmaker RJD2 , 80's rap wiseguys DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince , and a Cousin Cole and Flufftronix remix of a Misfits punk classic. MP3: The [...]

Here is some old stuff to keep things fresh . In the 1990's, where I grew up these were some of the songs that everyone was listening to. If you are alive, and you're from this planet, then you have heard this one before. Yes sir, that's what they call double Platinum. In 1991 Summertime reached was the #1 Rap Single on the billboard Hot 100. 1991 DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince - "Summertime" [...]

I'm putting up some old-skool rap in celebration of Grandmaster Flash & The furious Five getting in the Rock N' Roll Hall Of Fame earlier this week. I miss the old-skool rap sound and not just because I could never get behind hardcore gangsta rap lyrics. I think that artists like Public Enemy, Slick Rick and the immortal Run DMC had more style and pure rhyming skills than anyone since. Besides, rap songs about fucking bitches, shooting motherfuckers and getting rich are getting real old. I also miss the time when the MC and DJ mattered more than the fucking [...]

Do you know what makes bourbon so special? The sweet Kentucky water, according to our friend Phil. Day four started in who-knows-where West Virginia and ended in Louisville, KY. Someplace in between the two we managed to stop at a gas station directly next to a sign which read "Woodford Reserve to the right". Without much discussion the Odyssey took a detour towards this rather famous distillery where we were served bourbon balls, coffee, and...bourbon. On the way we managed to get lost and asked for directions at a horse farm. Thankfully they knew [...]
A year ago, I discussed the relationship of jazz & hip-hop . As I said then, there is an "uneasy tension" between the two. This issue appeared as early as the Eighties. For example, hip-hop was already smarting under the charge that sampling wasn't creativity (also see this earlier post on the myth that hip-hop was a product of poverty ). Stetsasonic 's "Talkin' All That Jazz" was a little defensive in tone, and it overplayed its argument lyrically, but the music made the point very effectively. Both [...]
