The phrase 'this joint is the shiznit' (much like the word un-blowapple ) is thrown around alot these days. Now I've never been one to listen to what is considered 'hip hop' in recent years, but if a DJ dropped a track like KRS-One's 'Step Into A World' in da club, you bet your gold plated grill I would be air-punch dancing like the two dudes in Maestro's 'Let Your Backbone Slide' video (1:35 mark). About a month ago I came across advert promoting a show where DJ Jazzy Jeff was headlining. This [...]
I don't recall Garfield ever being this funny. I've been sitting on this video for months wondering whether or not to post it given that it's one of the most surreal things I've seen on YouTube. Can anybody out there explain what it is all about? Leave a comment or hit us up in the C-Box to enlighten a brother. DJ Jazzy Jeff - Go See The Doctor 2k7 feat. Me: There's a rapper called Kel Spencer who has a single out today. You: What's up with all these 'real name no gimmick' MC's at the moment? Me: I know. But this MC isn't actually called Kel. You: So what's this Kel Spencer like? Is she good? Me: It's a bloke, he's alright actually. He Co-wrote/ghost-wrote Switch by Will Smith. You: Oh, I remember that track. It was pretty big in the charts and the clubs and that. [...]
All right, well fate has taken it easy on me for the second edition of the Herohill Big Ups. I launched this new section last weekend, but essentially I check out the visitor stats for the hill on the weekend and send a shout out to a particular city. I also post a song or songs that are related to said city. Considering some of the obscure cities that turn up in the stats (Budaörs, Hungary anyone?), finding some Philly music isn't too tough. There's a number of directions I could go with this, but it's giving me [...]

Not all of this is new, but neither is your Hall and Oates LP that has so many needle grooves you could play labyrinth with it. Hopefully this begins a long series of mixtape posts that, in addition to giving you good music, will catapult Love Controls into the elite of the blogosphere and soon make us the all-being masters of time, space and dimension. Cheers! Brand New - Millstone Bloc Party - The Once And Future King Minus The Bear - Throwin' Shapes [...]

No doubt ! DJ Jazzy Jeff is back. I'm a few months late on this one, but DAMN. I didn't really have high hopes for this album, but I stand corrected. I have to admit, I've never been checkin for Jeff as a producer. But he brought it, and also brought Jean Grae , Rhymefest , Method Man , CL Smooth and Big Daddy Kane with him. From being a highly respected DJ (who was rocking house parties at age 10 and winning the DMCs in 86), to being [...]

I wrote a few weeks ago at Circa 45 about Brand New Funk , one of the many great tracks off He's the DJ, I'm the Rapper by DJ Jazzy Jeff (the DJ) and Fresh Prince (the rapper). I praised the song's production/sampling value and even gave props to Fresh Prince's lyrical prowess (shocking, I know). Then last week, a comment was left by Ready Rock C (born Clarence Holmes), part of the production team who was pictured inside the liner notes for the album, a tip-off that he might have [...]

Analog Giant already told you DJ Jazzy Jeff will be dropping a new album in March. Here's a track from his The Return of the Magnificent EP , released in January, that pairs Jazzy Jeff with Chicago's Rhymefest , whose LP Blue Collar was an overlooked gem from last year. ( Previous post .) Not sure if this will end up on the new full-length, but I'm including the instrumental for you deejays and remixers. I love the almost reggae feeling to it and, [...]
A year ago, I discussed the relationship of jazz & hip-hop . As I said then, there is an "uneasy tension" between the two. This issue appeared as early as the Eighties. For example, hip-hop was already smarting under the charge that sampling wasn't creativity (also see this earlier post on the myth that hip-hop was a product of poverty ). Stetsasonic 's "Talkin' All That Jazz" was a little defensive in tone, and it overplayed its argument lyrically, but the music made the point very effectively. Both [...]
