DJ Qu ’s Debut album Gymnastics is subtle. The bass pumps and throbs delicately. The high hats undulate delicately. Restraint is the order of the day and it plays off beautifully. The gentle jacking of the percussion is reminiscent of Qu’s classic Jersey garage heritage, modified with subtle synthesised undertones and softened drum beats. The tracks sound thoroughly modern. Sound edits and digital tweaks have been used only to enhance the mood, not to increase the upfront dancefloor pressure. All this combines into a less functional-club record in its modern zeitgeist form. Instead, it contains thoughtful compositions of grooving, hypnotic atmospherics. [...]
Deep house music from America's East Coast. DJ Qu is a deep house DJ and producer who doesn't mind being called as such. Most artists are sniffy at best—outwardly hostile at worst—when labelled with a specific genre tag, whereas Ramon Lisandro Quezada has embraced the term, spending the last few years mining the very depths of the sound. And if these five full-lengths from the first half of 2011 are any indication, there's an abundance of talent in the world of producers this year.
