DJ Rap // I'm So (Urban Gorilla Recordings 1995) DJ Rap, previously nicknamed ‘The Queen of the Jungle’ was responsible for some of the biggest DJ sets of the time around 1994. The release of ‘Spiritual Aura’ alongside Pete Parsons on her label Proper Talent in 1994 increased her credibility as a producer and paved the way for an almost unique sound. Many would say that the sub-genre Hardstep went hand in hand with DJ Rap and this is certainly evident in the track titled ‘Hardstep’ [...]

I have been waiting SO long for a few of these guys in here. Over 2 months ago I heard a preview of a Dirty South track played at Pacha called "ID" at the time and finally it is here, alongside Afrojack s' ILL new release, "Can't Stop Me". Dimitri Vangelis & Wyman are absolutely proving themselves with their very own original release scheduled for Feb. 9th (If you're like me you can appreciate a rip). Quintino drops fire, Hardwell drops fire and I found a pretty heavy remix of "Who [...]
No more grunge for at least a month. I loved writing about that fiasco and it got me a lot of hits, but goddamn it bummed me out. Let's dance. Orbital One Perfect Sunrise (Phil Hartnoll Mix) One Perfect Sunrise (Stereo-8 Remix) Acid Pants (JDS Mix) Orbootal "One Perfect Sunrise" is a song that sounds like its title; beautiful and awe-inspiring, and these two remixes are almost just as great. The Phil Hartnoll mix works [...]

The term "intelligent drum n bass" isn't one that really ever stuck with me, finding one form of music more intelligent than another being slightly baffling. One track however that fell under the journalist's banner and shaped my listening tastes in the early 902s was the amazing "Spiritual Aura" by Engineers Without Fear . Dj Rap & Aston are the people behind the name and this track often appears wrongly credited to solely Rap. To ignore Aston's influence is a mistake however as he'd already proven his skill behind the mixing [...]

From Jazzy Jeff through to Josh Wink , Philadelphia has always been a melting pot of creativity and ingenuity within the hip-hop community. As ?uestlove of The Roots points out, New York hip-hop cast such a shadow over the rest of the east coast that Philly DJs had their work cut out from the start and had to be "three times as good" just to make an impression, thus any DJs who did last the distance were exceptionally talented. Put together by Butch Mayo of Emuwna Filmz and a [...]

It's been about 12 years since I was introduced to DJ Rap via BT's "Never Gonna Come Back Down." I was intrigued to see who exactly would inspire Mike Doughty to find a way to insert her into his freestyle on that song and why he would want her digits. Then I saw the cover of her debut electro-pop album Learning Curve. I mean, if you're a red-blooded American man (who loves electronica) and you see that album cover and don't buy it... keep on walkin'. That album was front to back goodness, decent processed [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive "Once you've gone pop, it's hard to go back," DJ Rap tells Spinner. The drum 'n' bass queen turned electro pop chanteuse should know. She's about to release her new album 'Synthesis,' her first pop record since her 1999 mainstream breakthrough, 'Learning Curve.' "I love writing pop. I'm a writer at heart. I started writing for other people and rediscovered my love of music," she says of the past decade, which saw Rap, born Charissa Saverio, return to her underground past [...]
I hope everyone enjoyed their Record Store Day and got plenty of nifty neato keen exclusive records. I sure as hell did and in the coming weeks I'll probably be posting them. Until then here are some especially bitchin' tracks that I've been meaning to share for a while now. Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride (Steir's 1999 Ride Club Mix) DJ Rap - Good To Be Alive (Deep Dish Remix) Sometimes shit is creepy man. Not a week goes by after I mention how [...]

Resident remixologist Ali Hussain is out this week so I, editrix Jessica, will be bringing you this week's " Remix Monday", featuring a little band that went by the name Nirvana . I shouldn't have to educate you at all on the history or legacy of the band and front man Kurt Cobain . Nor should I have to talk about drummer Dave Grohl and his continuation in music with the Foo Fighters . To be honest, I don't know much about Krist Novoselic , Nirvana's bass player, and had to Wikipedia the [...]
