Hey people! For those of you who might be in and or near Washington D.C. I'd like to extend an invitation to check out a show I'm participating in with an old associate, Shep Fairey . We're doing a 3 person show at Irvine Contemporary Gallery . Many of you know me as DJ Spooky , but I started out mainly as a writer and artist. Me and Shep know one another from waaay back in our university days. Check the details - me and him are presenting some of our recent print [...]

I'm not packing clothes for this year's CMJ Marathon in New York City. In fact, I'm not even bringing down a laptop. Instead of spending five straight days inhaling various poisons, feverishly blogging on the same nonsense that everyone else is covering, and ransacking my weathered eardrums with out-of-tune guitar shreds and swollen bass lines, I'm limiting my trip to one day and two nights, and seeing how much I can cram in. Armed with two note pads, running shoes, an itinerary, and a fistful of Ritalin, I'm leaving Boston on [...]
It's time to hit the road again. The SanFranMusicTech Summit is happening again on Monday Oct 20 and I am honored to have been invited back once more to participate on a Social Networking panel. The conference has attracted a formidable list of speakers. And here's the about: "The SanFran MusicTech Summit will bring together [...]
This weekend marks the opening of Irvine Contemporary's latest show, Regime Change Starts At Home. Irvine brings together 3 artists working in various mediums, each making a political statement through their art. Most should be familiar with Shepard Fairey's iconic stencil work, particularly his recent portrait of Obama which has gained a national ubiquity. Al Farrow 's [...]

Alias, Resurgam (Anticon, 2008) MP3 : "Well Water Black" Young Brendon Whitney - aka Alias - cut his teeth musically on hip-hop. The tough part about that, especially when you're from a backwoods/hillbilly fuck-town in Maine, is that all you're doing is lining yourself up against the likes of Wu-Tang, KRS-One, Run-DMC, etc. Those are some tough shoes to fill. Had Alias been able to fast-forward eight years (thus skipping some fairly uninteresting attempts as a white [...]
how 'bout an e compilation? Made one today, because it's Sunday evening and I'm bored. I've been to the Hadouken! show on Wednesday and it was pretty awesome. The venue was small, the people and the band were both wild, crazy and in a very good mood. They've only played for about 50 minutes, though all the important songs along some new ones were in the setlist(Liquid Lives, TBTG, Dance Lesson,

... Footsteps. Nothing but footsteps, loud and clear, walking the length of the brownstone apartment above. A constant pacing that started near the front door, walked to the opposite end of the house, turned and walked back to the door. Slowly, methodically, but unmistakably. At first, I believe the radio was on, I could hear this strange pacing (they had no dogs or pets of any kind) only intermittently, until it finally made its way into our consciousness as the Art Director's Daughter and I made dinner. I turned off the radio. Then, when it was very quiet, a chill [...]

Trying to keep up with all the new singles out there has been a little overwhelming recently, but it's good to hear some great new music coming out. Here are a bunch of them alongside some other albums that have been in our queue recently. Singles Batteries "Childproof" This is a jaunty little tune that has a nice swing to it and counteracted by a tinge of darkness just to keep it interesting. The crunchy guitar blends in nicely with the rythmic guitar [...]

DJ Spooky (photo: wikipedia ) Paul D. Miller, aka DJ Spooky , was at Boston's Institute of Contemporary Art last weekend. He did a well received DJ spin in the ICA's giant lobby on Friday night and presented a "work in progress" live mix of a string trio on Saturday that was universally panned savaged in the Boston press (more on that below). But Thursday night's lecture / performance was what I was most looking forward to -- and it's the only gig [...]
For this week's mix, a famously sampled Bob Dylan cover, T Rex in their early hippie nonsense phase, new stuff from Dengue Fever and Late of the Pier, and a White Whale track from the last issue of Esopus . The mix is a little on the dark side until the end, but it's the middle of winter, so you and your johns can like it or lump it. Also, a challenge: try getting off during the Teach-In track. Dutch ABBA wannabes with a really surreal command of the English language ("Maybe it's a bigot!") challenge all but the [...]

Weekend warrior reports in for a briefing: Last night I had nearly no concerns, just let my mind wander (as well as my physical being) onto an island... That island being the mysterious & exotic nation of of Alameda... note: all photos of this Alameda adventure shamelessly stolen from Flickr since i didn't bring my own picture taking device Where I spent hours just bumber banging, flippering, bleeping, dinging, tilting and whatnot at the [...]
