Django Reinhardt spent the Second World War in Paris. Jazz saved his life , even as it cost others theirs, explains Sociological Images: Reinhardt, then, survived because the Nazis loved jazz music, even as Hitler censored the music and, on his orders, people who dared to listen to, dance to, or play it were encamped and members of the groups who invented it were murdered. Irony indeed. -- Visit No Rock & Roll Fun to comment, complain and kvetch

Django Reinhardt (1910-1953) is one of my favorite musicians. His style is always palatable and his technique, musicianship, and virtuosity were completely enviable. He was a musical revolutionary in every sense of the word and his collaborations with violinist Stephane Grappelli lead to a career of exalted and venerable recordings. Even after loosing the use of two of his fingers on his left hand after a fire, Django relearned the instrument and played with remarkable fluency. There really hasn't been anyone quite like him since. [...]

It's pouring rain today in Los Angeles, January 23rd , and it's also Django Reinhardt 's birthday so enjoy Honeysuckle Rose as I strenuously finish this tedious piece of writing (not this one, another one - your confusion is understandable). mp3: Django Reinhardt - Honeysuckle Rose

Georgia On My Mind is most commonly associated with Ray Charles. It appears on every tribute album to Ray, and Willie Nelson (who recorded the song in 1978) sang it at his funeral. But Georgia was a standard long before Ray Charles made it his own. It was written by Hoagy Carmichael and lyricist Stuart Gorrell in 1930. The story goers that the Georgia of the title was originally intended to refer to Hoagy's sister, but realising that Gorell's words could apply also to the southern US state, the writers were happy to keep things ambiguous. The plan [...]

Gimme a board, messieurs. Pour les grandes vagues et les surfer garcons (et filles), here's a twangy big-ninth-version of Charles Trenet's „La Mer" by Psycho Tiki entrepreneurs The Aquamarines , and the probably most liquid version of Serge's & Jane's „Je t'aime (moi non plus)" ever heard, performed by Berlin's number one surf guitarist and lounge expert Kahuna Kawentzmann – the German „Kawentzmann" translates as a rogue wave you shouldn't even try on a Big Wednesday, got my drift, kids? Wet name choice, and even your girlfriend may get instantly ... okay, forget about that. Both tracks [...]
Two hours of classic gypsy jazz from the legendary guitarist.
The story of Blue Moon — its transition from a movie song that was rewritten several times to jazz song and then pop hit — was told in The Originals Vol. 40 , which included the first version, The Bad In Every Man, sung on film by Shirley Ross. This collection of 38 versions covers all manner of approaches. There are the early jazz interpretations, most of them with vocals (though Gene Krupa, Django Reinhardt and in 1944 the Cozy Cole Allstars do it instrumentally). Then it became something of a torchsong number in the hands of [...]

Optimash Prime sporting the Winter Collection Another day, another song. Something a little more chilled out today I think. This is one of the most instantly recognisable songs for a certain generation of French people (think 60+). For me it was lovely to hear a song that my grandad used to sing to me played by one of the greatest guitarists ever. Django Reinhardt - La Mer Download the song here. [...]
So it's a Thursday afternoon, you're hungry. A pizza could make do, but what you really have a craving for is Heath Ledger's soulful rendition of "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" from the bleachers in 10 Things I Hate About You. You don't have Heath, but Muse's version will make due. It sounds [...]

Virtuoso is a sensational album of jazz guitar.
Yesterday morning was lovely. One of those Sunday mornings where you wake up and the sun is out and the light in the house is perfect and there's nothing else going on. The Sunday paper was waiting on the driveway, coffee brewed, and the baby was happy. We sat an enjoyed the morning for many hours, listening to a playlist I'd made that was solely comprised of music from the 1930s and 40s, which only added to how pleasant everything felt. Here's a taste of it--ten songs from the 1930s. In my house music from the 30s means mostly country [...]
The legendary Django Reinhardt appears on an AVID release for the second time, here featuring his electric period. Focusing on his music after 1947 when he returned from the USA having played with Duke Ellington, we also include a valuable recording made at the RDF radio studios possibly for a film soundtrack and skillfully re-mastered by AVID's own sound engineers. Django's music in the 1950's
