As much as I want to, I will not be posting any cuts from the new Spiritualized LP, Sweet Heart Sweet Light, which came into my possession yesterday. It was lovingly packaged with posters, flyers and stickers, which I'm trying my best to apply to every available surface in my home. Alas, as the official [...]

[photos by acidjack] Shinji Masuko is a revered cult figure among aficionados of latter day Japanese experimental rock. Perhaps best known for his work in DMBQ , and more recently as a guitarist for Boredoms , Masuko is a renaissance man of the scene, also making a huge contribution in music journalism. He was also instrumental in raising money for Japanese musicians who were victims of the tsunami, an effort in which Oneida and NYCTaper participated . It was a rare treat for us stateside to get to see Masuko in a "solo" (with [...]

What were we thinking unleashing two of the world's most hazardous rock groups -- Tel Aviv's Montonix and Tokyo's DMBQ -- on the WFMU Record Fair this past Sunday? Well, we had both group sign declarations -- in blood -- assuring us that they would not set any fires. But they still nearly managed to bring the Record Fair to a grinding halt with their predictably unpredictable antics. Monotonix kicked off the whole mess with vocalist Ami Shale immediately dumping a full trashcan on the [...]
I didn't do anything today, and I loved it. Actually, I didn't love it, because I woke up with one of the all-time worst hangovers I've ever experienced. Last night I was treated to the company of Jack, Ken and Katie. We decided -- after little deliberation -- to play a drinking game. You see, The Simpsons Movie was on television, and someone (I think it was Katie) decided on a simple set of rules. We had shot glasses and a spinner set up in front of us. Rule number one: whenever a main character (Bart, Homer, Lisa, [...]
It's already been five days? Oh, how the time flies when one is having an amazing time. Too bad it's so fucking hard to get a job in the city...I'd move back quicker than you could say, "Pick a coast and stick with it, gunt nosher!" In case you just missed that, I've introduced you all to "gunt nosher," which I will be proudly writing and yelling ad naseum as I attempt to make "gun nosher" the new "douchebag". Let's make it happen, people. I've already submitted it to the Urban Dictionary. Now you people have to do [...]

Good tidings on this first Friday of June, Internet travelers. Is the weather nice where you live? Has that neighborhood swimming pool opened yet? Can you hear the sweet, lilting song of the ice cream truck as is barrels down your street at break-neck speeds, barely escaping a collision with the doughy face of a six-year-old who "just wanted a Spiderman Popsicle"? Are the birds and bees graciously eating one another's assholes, or doing whatever it is they do to give us that birds-and-bees expression? I'll tell you one thing that's not happening: I'm not going to see [...]
I overate this weekend. Yesterday I had brunch at a little outdoor cafe on Ocean that made a sublime omelet for breakfast, and had fancy gourmet Mexican food for dinner (grilled achiote chicken served over a layered casserole of corn tortillas, tomatillo salsa, manchego, panela, and cotija cheeses, and coriander radish sprout salad, according to their menu) at the Border Grill, which is owned by two lady chefs who have a show on the Food Channel (apparently). Delicious! Today I had a Santa Fe omelet at noon and In-N-Out later in the day. The hotel near LAX had free food [...]
Are your brackets busted? This was the first year since I was a wee little one that I neglected to fill out an NCAA tournament bracket in advance. March Madness is only marginally interesting when there are no dramatic storylines or Cinderella teams. Two one-seeds and two two-seeds in the Final Four is about as captivating as the Patriots making the Super Bowl. With all this (one paragraph of) sports talk, I've probably lost my entire Sunday evening audience of sexually ambiguous, mildly anorexic, ironic-shirt-wearing, antisocial music snobs. RULES for uninitiated noobs : With [...]
