Another multi-use space has popped up right on the inner ring of the Mission - at 161 Erie Street (off Mission street between Duboce and 14th Streets) - offering a "zone for mixing, mingling and collaboration." Public Works SF is throwing a weekend-long opening reception party to introduce the endless possibilities of the space. After a quick skim of the long list of DJs scheduled, I spotted Debaser 's Jamie Jams, Hot Tub and DNTEL (The Postal Service) as highlights, but an art show and [...]
(illustration by T. Brown) The Peppermill, a small nonprofit "net label" based in the mountains of Canada, just recently unveiled a new collaborative project called "29993. Asking guest artists to compose a single song set in the distant future of the year 2999 and pairing that with single track artwork from known and unknown artists, [...]

james figurine - "555666888333 (download) James Figurine is one of the many aliases of The Postal Service 's Jimmy Tamborello. Others include Dntel and just plain Figurine . Essentially, this is a really well thought out song about text messaging. I've always loved the lyrics to this...." When we disagree, we fight in capital letters," "We'll fight face to face like it was the nineties again," etc etc. I think it's pretty brilliant. This is from [...]

image by blentley Well, with the Crane and Baby flying around over Canadia, delivering large sticks to their respective nests, I decided it'd be kinda stellar to do what's known in the music blogging world as... "NOT DROP THE EMMER-EFFING BALL WHILE THE BOSS IS GONE!!!"... And I was gonna review all sorts of new, fun shit... really, I was... but then I was attacked by a bunch of beautiful-but-annoying cottonwood tree-sperm , and some good old-fashioned summertime lonely to boot! #30 Ratatat - Seventeen Years Album: Ratatat Year: 2004 Maybe you love Ratatat. Maybe you don't. Maybe you did love Ratatat, but have gotten tired of them as their sound has failed to evolve. It really doesn't matter. When you take their first LP, Ratatat, and cue up track one, you hear Young Churf boast about his [Read Full Post...]

I am without a doubt ridiculously sentimental. I mark all sorts of different occasions that normal people would forget in a moment. Most of them have to do with the last time I ever did something, or heard something, or saw someone. As it happens, my son is graduating from high school in a week and I find myself projecting my notion of "lasts" on him. For instance, the concert he performed in a couple of weeks ago will be his last appearance on that stage, the last time he'll get to play [...]

This is after party was forbidden and frowned upon immensely the next morning - especially as these photos acted as terrible terrible shameful evidence. Look how jubilant they are. "just posted the title track from the new After Parties EP" - Jimmy, Dntel It's most certainly a 'take three listens to like' track. It puts quite a lot of its eggs in that catchy synth riff basket. The beat drifts in with its eyes staring directly in [...]

So I'm on my way to Taylor's house to record, I'm running pretty late, and it turns out he'd been taking an epic nap for a solid 4 hours. In conclusion, we both lagged yesterday and forgot to post up a reminder on the blog for the mix sessions! We did however remember to press record, so here is our third edition. Thank you very much to those of you who did remember to tune in, it's much appreciated! Enjoy. [...]

Illustration by Mike Howdy howdy!!! It's already hump day, who you humpin' today? You enjoying MIXTAPES WEEK as much as I am?? Sweet bajiggity jesus on a stick, dipped in batter, deep fried, and served with a dollop of brown horseradish mustard it's been nuffin' but good times in the house! Now, after yesterdays Photograph Of The Day excursion into the odd world of humanity , I think maybe we keep this one on the shortened side, eh? Today we got a mixtape from one [...]
I guess this week hearsay is basically a video site. I think the problem is that I'm a sucker for videos shot with good cameras. And the color, lighting, and editing of this Future Islands show in North Carolina definitely fits that mould. I was aware of Future Islands from the split 73 they did with Dan Deacon , but "An Apology," a track from their upcoming album, In Evening Air has me pretty hyped to hear what else they have up their sleeves. Baltimore by way of Chapel Hill; I [...]

Like some sort of indie stereotype who was shamelessly born in 1993, the only reason I found about this guy was through a curiosity to see who was making all the cool noises to accompany Sir Gibbard in The Postal Service . I personally managed to pump this guy into my head in the summer: It was 4am, and I was walking back through Frinton on my way home, having just slept outside on a hard floor of a beach hut. It seemed like a mildly appropiate situation to be listening to Mr. Tamborello; he's not just Indie Electronica. On " Everything [...]

This comes out terribly late - I admit, I feel asleep...for a week - and just woke up in time for the Winter Olympics. There's still no snow, only rain - and it bugs me why they have a blizzard there where my sister is in Virginia, and not a tiny speck of snow in Vancouver. It's scary to think that this is climate change at work, which makes me want to be more enviroment friendly than I am right now. I vow to recycle more and only buy only vintage clothes.. and maybe take up the art of [...]

PART TWO: DNTEL With that wave of mom and pop record stores closing monthly winding down and completely gutting the support for physical music for people to discover, iPods building closed personal shells running mostly ringtone quality sound thru tiny white earbuds instead of record players playing aloud, and faceless torrents and file sharing sites handing out music like its those frickin' free Auto Mart gazettes sitting in those bright yellow stands in front of your local closed down Blockbuster's, i'd like to spend some of the young readers time by sharing how [...]

I wish for snow. Proper snow. Not that just that one day of snow we had last December. I wish it would snow for the Olympics. Traffic, tons of people...and snow. It would be fun ;) Here's the recap of last week's Lyrics of the Day - "You can make everything out of anything. And you don't believe in violence" Macgyver Blues by My Little Pony "Teach me to [...]
