Here is a ranking of the full albums that I have purchased so far this year (that were released this year). I think it's been a record for new albums in 3 months, at least for me. Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank And this is absolutely the best Modest Mouse track since 2000's The Moon and Antarctica . What a great song. Go buy the album please if you enjoy the song [...]

Good instrumental bands are usually hard to come by, which is why I was so happy when I came upon Do Make Say Think . A quintet from Canada, Do Make Say Think has recently released their fifth LP, You, You're a History in Rust . The album features vocals for the first time in their band history, but not those of any of the band members. Guest vocalists Tony Dekker and Akron/Family sing a few bars in each song, but the sound is still strongly based on the instruments. A definite folk feel [...]

You know sometimes when you buy a record and you know instantly that you are hearing something that just feels SPECIAL. Well Do Make Say Think's "You, You're a History in Rust" is special, very special. But it deserves its own special column. For now let me assure it is greatness smacked down and laid out. Having said that I am feeling very satisfied at the moment musically. Firstly, in the live arena I have witnessed tremendous shows this year by M. Ward, The Mountain Goats, Neko Case, Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird, Calexico and The Dears. Some great [...]

Do Make Say Think You, You're a History in Rust Rating: 8.3 (out of 10) A stunning album of truly magical beauty from a band that I never gave much thought to as anything more than simply a quality outfit of postrock musicians. I didn't expect them to reach the heights they've hit on this release, but it is wonderful. From opening track "Bound to be that Way," a majestic infusion of rock into beautiful orchestration, to the album's magnificent closer, "In Mind," there is [...]
Normally I would say that it's rare that I would have this week's Graboid on a Friday, but lately it seems it's slowly falling later into the week. I mean to have this up yesterday morning, but I happened to wake up feeling really ill and basically just stayed in bed most of the day. I promise next week that i'll have it up on it's intended day, Wednesday. Keep an eye out for it, and if I don't well you can send me some nasty haikus. All I can say about [...]

There's a shit ton of new albums coming out in the next little while, and one of the perks of running a site so big that it makes Myspace look like Friendster is that we get to hear a lot of it before you, the commoners. So, hear's my breakdown of what's worth checking out in the next little. Arcade Fire - The Neon Bible (buy it here) It would have been fun as hell to hate this record. The band is massive, everyone loves [...]

In the past year we've had Rock Blocks, Pop Rock Blocks, Easy Rockin' Rock Blocks, and decidedly Un-Rock Blocks. Today, we enter a new chapter in the time honored tradition of the Rock Block with our first Post-Rock Block. From the land of polar bears, moose, and ice, and from the bloodlines of Broken Social Scene, come Do Make Say Think with a new album, You, You're A History In Rust, due out in the near future, and a Cleveland stop at The Grog Shop on their forthcoming tour. Unfortunately, [...]

Do Make Say Think were always that bit friendlier-sounding, more positive in outlook and less prone to bouts of screamy anger than labelmates Godspeed You Black Emperor. Which is probably why, bearing in mind Godspeed's extended absence, DMST have endured that bit longer – less worry, less stress. In fact, Godspeed were probably swallowed by one of the frown lines on their own foreheads, tumbling into it as if sucked into an almighty rend in the space-time continuum, tumbling with fists raised like antennazzzzzz… With You, You're A History [...]
Sleeping States - "Don't Make Me Over". I'm in Paris at this moment, stumbling past brasseries and gold foiled horsemen. I have my agenda: my chocolate to-dos and pastry obligations, friends to meet and greet, kindnesses to find, secrets to uncover. I have a map of the arrondissements, euros in my pocket. My shoes are tied. I listen to the snarl of cars and the snicker of vespas. I walk and walk and to be honest I am trying to be made over. The opposite of Markland Starkie's strange, sweet, wheezing love-song. "Don't make me over / now that I [...]

It's a post-rock sort of Thursday, and I've got just the cure for that itch you have. Constellation will be releasing the new Do Make Say Think album "You, You're A History In Rust" on February 27th (Europe on the 12th), and it's quite the follow-up to 2003's "Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn". While that 2003 album was by all means a smash and represented a huge step forwards for the band, the new album stays on that same track. If you're not familiar with Do Make Say Think, then here's a brief review. Broken Social Scenesters Charles Spearin [...]

Wohl auf kein Album bin ich in nächster Zeit gespannter als auf das neue von Do Make Say Think . Das (wie immer bei DMST) lang und poetisch betitelte You, You're A History In Rust erscheint ziemlich genau gestern in vier Wochen, und gerade bin ich bei Amp Camp auf das erste Stück davon gestoßen. Auf Bound To Be That Way rocken Do Make Say Think wie schon lange nicht mehr, wie sehr geht denn da gegen Ende der Drummer ab? Gleichzeitig bricht der Song aber nie richtig in einen großen Refrain aus, [...]

When you listen to a Do Make Say Think song, you have no choice but to go all Astro-projection and see some sh*t you can't believe. I mean, we're talking about songs that will grab your brain, tickle it for 5 minutes with some sparse dreamy guitars and then blow up your hypothalamus with a 2 minute horngasm. So get ready to see outer space because the 5th long player from these fine Canadians is about to drop February 27, ought-7 (2/12/07 for those living in the Old World) on Constellation Records . [...]
Alright, A Reminder's unofficial and certainly unplanned Canada Week continues. Next month one of Canada's most innovative instrumental bands Do Make Say Think will be releasing their fifth record on Constellation . The fantastically titled You, You're A History In Rust sees the band continue from where 2003's Winter Hymn... left off. I suspect the record will be more enjoyed by fans of later DMST rather than the earlier stuff. Two members of DMST (Charles and Ohad) spend a lot of time playing in Broken [...]

Two days from now I will have the opportunity to finally see one of my favourite bands Modest Mouse after many years of waiting. By all reports their recent live shows have been a blend of new songs and ones from their previous breakthrough album, with a few oldies thrown in. I would be happy if they just played "Lonesome Crowded West" start to finish, but of course its only natural they will concentrate on the present. Anyway it got me to thinking of other artists that I haven't had the opportunity to see live. 2006 was great [...]

I`m not going to be making another post until after Christmas ...So I will start off by saying Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone...Now as 2006 winds down to a close I find myself listening to albums that I either missed or didn`t give a real chance...1st is Final Fantasy`s He Poo`s Clowds ...A very clever album title btw...I never was really in a violin mood this year, so this album stayed on the shelf... 2nd is Tegan & Saras So Jealous ...An album [...]
