So hear it is. The result of months of hard work from some of our favorite bands across this nation (and even a special cameo from one of our favorite American outfits). Basically, the idea was simple: Pay tribute to a Canadian legend on Canada Day. Oh, and get some free content for the blog of course. In all seriousness, Gordon Lightfoot has been making music for decades and his stories are passed from generation to generation. Unfortunately, when asked about the greatest Canadian songwriters, Gordon is often left off the list. [...]
Thursday was a special night at Tranzac, and not just because it was my birthday. No, local folk duo Dog Is Blue teamed up with another local musician, multi-instrumentalist Anna Atkinson, for a double CD release party. Dog Is Blue were up first, playing a set almost exclusively pulled from their new album Tortoise (review). What sets the duo apart from the plethora of other folk-based indie
There's a great double CD release party happening on Thursday (June 9th) at Tranzac. Toronto ghost-folk duo Dog Is Blue officially launch their solid new album Tortoise (review), while local multi-instrumentalist Anna Atkinson releases her new album as well. On top of all that, it's my birthday, so it HAS to be a fun night out. I have a pair of passes and both CDs to give away to a lucky
Dog Is Blue ::: photo by Karol Orzechowski I was first intrigued by Dog Is Blue when I saw them described as "garage folk." My brain engaged in such Olympic-level mental gymnastics trying to puzzle out what this entailed that I decided to stage an investigation, and downloaded the band's newly-released sophomore album, Tortoise. What seemed [...]

Paul Watson and Laura Heaney are Dog Is Blue , whose sophpomore LP, Tortoise , was recorded live off the floor at London, ON's House of Miracles studio. Blending folk tradition and rock embellishments, the duo's subtle and charming tunes are perfect for relaxed, summer afternoons in the backyard. The album drops next Tuesday, but Frederictonians can catch Dog Is Blue perform tomorrow night at Gallery Connection with Construction & Destruction. Other tour dates: May 16 - Charlottetown, PEI – Baba's May 17 - Rothesay, NB – The Treehouse (with Wax [...]

For the next week, I'll be taking my talents to South Beach... well, Orlando actually. Do you care? Of course not, but since it's for a work conference the posts will be short and sweet. Fear not though loyal reader, while short and too the point, these posts are also full of free shit for you. If you have ever met Paul Watson, one half of the TO based folk anthemists Dog is Blue , you know he's obsessed with pedals, used gear and sea themed narratives. What you might not [...]

It's hard to make folk and roots music stand out from the crowd. For some reason though, Canadian artists seem to have an affinity for it. The latest entry is the new new album from Toronto's Dog Is Blue. They release the sophomore album Tortoise on May 17th. This is much more of a band effort than the home recording of the debut. The result is a fuller sound with a new layer of warmth,
Paul Watson and Laura Heaney have got a good thing going. The Toronto garage-folk duo harmonize vocally and overlap all kinds of instruments to create a really unique, pleasing sound. Watson's nearly-spoken delivery coupled with Heaney's wonderful singing voice, some banjo and glockenspiel - and some viola from guest Anna Atkinson to boot! - generate [...]

Port Greville's Construction & Destruction has a sound built from love and contrast. David's guttural vocals and sludgy guitar riffs are the perfect counterpoint for Colleen's falsetto and dime store casios, and the unique mix of raw energy and quirky tenderness is something to treasure. Years ago, the duo started writing songs as they rebuilt an old seaside home. Now, almost five years and four albums later, the duo has a catalog to be proud of and the respect of every band with whom they've ever shared a stage. Sadly, they [...]

Love; as far as pop songs go, pining over the perfect partner is glorified no matter how heartbreaking the end results actually are. For The Burning Hell 's Mathias Kom, Happens in Florida - a track from his terrific debut LP - shows that the shine of love has long been tarnished. The grandiose visions and hope of new love have been replaced by reality, and Kom draws strength from that. His simple strums and witty similes grow into a surging choral swell as Kom dares love to [...]
Toronto-based indie folk act Dog Is Blue had one of our favorite Canadian albums of 2009. He's back now with a 5-song EP, with 100% of proceeds benefiting the Daily Bread Food Bank. The EP, Hot Air Balloons, features a new Dog Is Blue original, plus three covers of Canadian indie favorites and a remix. You can buy your copy of the EP here. Dog Is Blue's website
"Camilo (the Magician)" Band: Said the Whale (Vancouver, BC) Album: Islands Disappear Thoughts: I'm not entirely sure this song/video is representative of the album as a whole, though both the album and the video are pretty excellent. The song/video is power-poppy, while the rest of the album is decidedly more subdued, but if you were ever a fan of Death Cab/The New Pornographers/possibly Band of Horses at least watch the video. "Raise [...]

This pick of the week has been a long time coming. I've e-mailed back and forth with Paul Watson , mentioned the album a couple of times , and I managed to catch 'the band' live a couple of weeks ago , but, alas, ... Makes Ghost Noises has not been given the illustrious (and much sought after) title of "Pick of the Week". (... until now!) Certainly, part of the reason that Dog is Blue didn't make the cut earlier was just the nature of the song-songwriter or self-described ghost-folk [...]
