It's funny that music videos continue to thrive now, when they don't have many television networks interested in broadcasting them. In fact, with the advent of outlets like YouTube and Pitchfork.TV, I watch more videos now than I have in years—and in my days as a publicist, I found them to be an invaluable publicity tool. They were always a good excuse for another press release! With digital cameras getting cheaper and better, and everybody and their brother fashioning themselves the next Wes Anderson, it's easier than ever to make a video for not much money. In 2006 I spent a good bit of time with Dogme 95's debut LP, Arcadian Hyms. Thanks to a 100 gb hard drive and iTunes shuffle I was recently reminded of its lo-fi charms; i.e. the unlikely intersection of cheap Casio keyboards, fake beats, and backwoods pentecostal freakouts. The kind of unholy [...]
Parts & Labor (Abrinsky) Usually when you hear about a free show, the performance unquestionably mirrors the price of admission. But this Sunday The Lounge has a free show that folks should feel gui... Continue reading "A Free Show (If You're of Age) That Definitely Shouldn't be Free" >

Recently I had to reformat my mp3 player and quickly threw a slew of songs into the player. In the bunch were some older tracks by a band called Ox . And in amongst those was this cover of Cheap Trick's "Surrender". Give it a listen and/or download... come to think of it, try out the rest, as well. Pssst... that's a new * Franz Ferdinand track sitting down there. ox surrender ox [...]

Cold War Kids , another one of the blogger-love bands, played a free show at the Apple store mid afternoon. If you haven't seen a free show at the Apple Store, I recommend it, it's got great sound and comfortable seating, and for a grand price of zero dollars you can't complain. It was the Cold War Kids' first performance ever with a sitting down audience, but they still got the mac-geeks grooving in their seats to a powerful soul-rock performance of songs off their 2006 album "Robbers & Cowards". Lead singer Nathan Willett (who totally has [...]

Nick Wright is Dogme 95 , a historically informed solo project based out of Chicago. Instead of taking on the norm with mediocre acoustic melodies sung over boring songs about happy love, Wright tends to be a bit more interesting. His album, Arcadian Hymns , is about a variety of subjects from time travel, ill-concieved baptisms, and the mysterious makings of the universe. The same can be said for his new album, The Reagle Beagle , which is a fictionally sung tale about Wright's imaginary journey with Charles Darwin, [...]
I'm finally getting around to posting something from Dogme 95 . Dogme 95 is the creation of Chicago's Nick Wright and his music is past being eclectic. I almost don't know where to begin describing the songs from his full-length Arcadian Hymns . But I will... The lo-fi songs are obviously the creation of a forward-thinking 4-track mind, but that's not a dis. Combining guitars, multi-tracked vocals, drum machines, Casio keyboards, and organic percussion, the music somewhat reminds me of Sentridoh and early Beck stuff. Great bedroom [...]

Dogme 95 is the moniker for Nick Wright, who also happens to be the man behind the Mission Label out of Chicago. If you are not familiar with the label, make sure to explore it's artists. Some real good musicians. Since this unforeseen break, I have really embraced the sounds of Dogme 95, an alt-country/experimental sound that in my opinion, really excel on the two tracks below from the 2005 release, Arcadian Hymns. An acoustic blend that fortunately continues onto his latest project, a cd entitled The Reagle Beagle. Both are must listens. [...]
