"I mean, look at me— I’m an actor. An actor, for crying out loud. You know how much rejection I face every day? But in this business of show, you have to have the heart of an angel and the hide... of an elephant." Words of wisdom from the perennial actor / never-nude, Tobias Funke. Yes, not everyone's cut out to be a a DeNiro, or a Regis, or a Pinkett-Smith, but there are a select few actors & actresses that have reached the pantheon of greatness, which is, of course, being memorialized in song. Such [...]

Tweet COOLRUNNINGS ' weird lo-fi tangent jams get an uplifting treatment by percussionist Meg Thomas on this demo released on Dracula Horse's Soundcloud. Known for making slightly off-the-wall music they do a pretty decent job of bringing that mix together in an offbeat cohesive way. Their latest album "Dracula Is Only The Beginning", whilst not exactly selling like a new Coldplay album might, was still well-received by almost anyone's ears who came in contact with it. The whole thing [...]

Tweet Frank blogged about Tawny Owl And The Birds Of Prey back in January , and they're back with a new double A-side, "Momus" & "What Time Is It There?". It's more or less what you'd expect from a band who describe themselves as "Britain's premier noise/soul/schism/alt.-rock Motown" outfit. But then again, it would be hard to make a track that wasn't what you'd expect from that. More precisely, I'd say it's minimal melodrama, if that's not an oxymoron. [...]
Don't get me wrong, I think bands and artists should primarily focus on their sounds and not so much their names. With that caveat, it would seem that as bands (and artists) build brands, a good name would be even more valuable to their efforts. Yet, there are too many examples of band names that are dumb, mundane, and/or make absolutely no sense. And they seem more commonplace than ever. It doesn't affect the music. It's just a headscratcher. These artists and bands overcome their names with enjoyable music. Thus, the list of good songs by bands [...]

Dear Mr Cool and Mrs Runnings; Why would you make us wait so so long for such an excellent excellent album? Oh, that's how long "excellent" takes to gestate? Gotcha. Well guys, I'm just glad you unleashed this beast. For those of you who may be about to listen to your first piece of COOLRUNNINGS music, allow me to reintroduce themselves (holla, Jay-Z). The (then) seven-piece from Knoxville, Tennessee have been releasing EPs for more than a year now, each one as eclectic, varied, and soul-crushing as its predecessor. When I introduced them back in [...]
![[Listen/Download] – New Song by COOLRUNNINGS – “Jesse”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3098846_lg.jpg)
COOLRUNNINGS, one of the more prolific bands that has yet to release a debut album, has returned with their latest demo, "Jesse." There is no word whether this will eventually appear on an album or if it is a one-off release. In truth, it does not matter - "Jesse" is enjoyable regardless. The most notable element of "Jesse" is the guitar tone, which blends into the vocals so well that at times it is hard to distinguish between the two. The entire track plays like one long chorus ( ironically ), guided by steady drums, and unfortunately ends [...]

Growing up in Knoxville, Tennessee, I constantly struggled to find people with similar taste in music. For every Pavement fan I located, I had to sift through fifty Travis Tritt die-hards, a hell I would not wish on anyone. It is this background that colors my adoration of COOLRUNNINGS, a septet hailing from that indie-rock void that is Knoxville. The fact that seven Knoxvillians found each other and decided to make this type of music is remarkable. (I can only imagine the trail of Tritt-fans left in their wake.) As previously [...]

For some reason it seems to be difficult to read a review or write-up about COOLRUNNINGS without someone saying they're "weird". Obviously, I've just gone and done the same thing, but I'm afraid I don't really see the whole "weird" thing. Maybe by weird they mean the at-times haunting and unsettling vocals? Or the funeral-like procession organs fused with the 80s synth-pop? Or the fact that by the end of each song it's managed to displace itself from the start of the song? Or maybe it's the talk of masturbation and fucking one's best friend (soon)? You're certainly [...]

It's fair to say bands with stupid names have to try that little bit harder to make any impression on me. In the case of Dogs Die In Hot Cars, the turning point came with hearing a fantastic song called Somewhat off The Way on a compilation CD. Sure enough, further investigation into the band's debut album Please Describe Yourself showed a pop band very much in touch with early-80s new-wavers like XTC, best shown on tunes like the brilliant Pastimes & Lifestyles. They seemingly vanished soon after, but better to leave one brilliant album as a legacy than slowly [...]

V oxtrot has a new song: Voxtrot - Trepanation Party (MP3) Dogs Die In Hot Cars offer a couple of new songs for free via Last.FM ... and the best news about it is that they're actually quite good! There's also a remix-contest going on if you're into that. Infos [...]

O que há entre o mau gosto (brega) e o bom humor? Os Dogs Die in Hot Cars !

For a while, we all thought that UK band Dogs Die in Hot Cars were done for good, but recently, the band has reemerged with a new project at hand. In order to get their second album completed, they are asking their fans to finish it up, as they seem to be done with working together. Regardless, you can read more about that project and download the entire second album demos for free at the band's web site . I, for one, can't wait to hear what someone does [...]

Dogs Die In Hot Cars - "Pop Nonsense" "Pop Nonsense" is a very optimistic song, but it's not about expecting desired outcomes so much as working hard for the things that you want, and being open to positive possibilities. The tone is bright and upbeat, but the mood is slightly anxious, with hints of doubt and insecurity mixing in with the singer's self-directed pep talk. It's not enough negativity to undermine the essential sentiment, but just enough to humanize both the singer and the song. The title seems to dismiss itself as being trite and banal, but [...]

One of the most rewarding things that can happen to you when you DJ is if someone comes up and asks you what a particular track is, and the track in question is a little-known song that is a personal favourite that you wish more people were into. This happened last Friday, and Tree was the man responsible, so thanks to him. It's also lead to this post too. Dogs Die In Hot Cars are one of my favourite bands. They only made the one album, Please Describe Yourself , but it was such [...]
