Ben Sklar It's rather de rigueur these days to sneak-announce the existence of new albums of note, eschewing the traditional long lead for the immediacy allowed by the internet and social media or whatnot, but in revealing the existence of a new Okkervil River record, Will Sheff went with the teasing route, playing a guessing game through last week in revealing a few letters of their new album's title each day, eventually announcing The Silver Gymnasium this past Monday. Not that the announcement didn't come with its share of surprise. Firstly, that [...]

A while back I asked followers of the Quick Before It Melts Facebook Page if they'd be interested in a monthly mixtape. The response was an overwhelming yes. Okay, it was only about eight people, but still, I take that as a good sign. I know I've tried experiments like this before but maybe this time it will stick. No pressure to have it out on any particular day of the month, or to follow any kind of special theme (although this one does). It won;t be on SoundCloud, or on YouTube, or anywhere else; if you want [...]

One of the litmus tests to gauge the durability and infinite nature of today's music is to look within a song's many parts to see what else can be constructed with it's existing stems, in an approach that operates outside the conventions of genre. Illustrating these audio truths is Zac Traeger, who comprises half of Austin, TX duo Zorch with Shmu, premiering his analog electrical rewiring of Doldrums' "Egypt". The organic samples from the Montreal's group'...

It's that time of year again, that's right, Festival Season. While some people tremble in fear at the thought of music festivals, we here at FPT say bring it on. And this year we start with Michigan's Electric Forest, stacked with sought-after names like String Cheese Incidient, Pretty Lights, Yeasayer, Passion Pit, and Empire of the Sun, and countless others. Recently making an appearance on travel website, Jetsetter's list of The World's Best Music Festivals, what makes this festival anymore appealing than the last? Well this year EF offers expanded philanthropic efforts, combined with its lineup and [...]

Sara Amroussi-Gilissen When Toronto's Hooded Fang first surfaced in early 2009, despite being over a year away from releasing their debut full-length Album , they seemed inescapable on the club circuit - I saw them thrice that year without trying at all. And because of that concentrated dose, and even though they were clearly still in the early stages of finding themselves, I assumed that sugary, ramshackle twee-pop would remain the bedrock of what they were about. Which was fine and fun, but not enough [...]

by Tiana Feng Doldrums video for "Holographic Sandscastles" doesn't actually have any sandcastles. Instead he seems to be super-imposed with some underwater images.
Director Winston Hacking put together an ambient swing of swirling colors and specters in the newest video from Montreal producer Doldrums for "Holographic Sandcastles." The track comes from Doldrums' latest album Lesser Evil , supplying the subtle 8-bit scores with singer Sami Nacomi contributing on vocals. Watch it below and grab Lesser Evil today on Arbutus Records .

Une musique qui nous enveloppe… Une sonorité toute délicate. Une voix claire. The Slow Revolt frappe encore.

On Record Store Day, the great Toronto electro-pop crew Austra hooked up with Gina X, a culty German late-'70s/early-'80s postpunk singer, to release a 123 single of a new track called "Mayan Drums." The single was limited to 500 copies and sold out quickly, and the group is only now sharing one of the tracks from the single. It's a remix from the Montreal producer and Grimes buddy Doldrums, and it's a harsh, rudimentary pound that pays tribute to the first sneering punks to play around with drum machines. Stream it below. Read More...

The Slow Revolt making good use of the guitar + electronics combo once more , yet with a more present guitar this time around. Doldrums is taken of the second part of the rising star's This Dark Matter EP, yet attracts you more into his wonderful world. It's all in the details, with the backing vocals, the twitches of the guitar during the chorus and so much more. This is a song to explore and love more with every play.
