It's taken me ages to review this, primarily because I honestly wasn't all that convinced at first. I've covered Dolfish before, actually, and pretty enthusiastically as it happens, and for some reason on first listen this album generated one of those disappointed 'oh', reactions which music fans know all too well. Don't worry though, it didn't last. Listening to this, as you can do in its entirety on Bandcamp , you'd probably laugh in my face if I confessed that what put me off was that it sounded rather more polished [...]
Still amazed that Kelley Deal performed in an alley this past fall as part of the Independents' Day Festival. For the past year or so, Kelley's been working with Mike Montgomery (Ampline) under the name R. Ring though one suspects that with an upcoming Breeders reunion tour (thus far limited to a handful of European dates), R. Ring performances might become a bit rarer. This is a pretty big event for Kobo and it's being treated as such - there will be 70 seats available in the [...]

I don’t immediately spring for musicians that opt for the humorous over the serious. I might be in the minority here, but musicians that sing about the weighty questions in life, the BIG questions, always tend to catch my ear quicker. But truly it’s a balancing act; you can only appreciate the darkness with the ... Continue reading

Dolfish: [ I'd Rather Disappear Than Stay the Same ] by i.am.ian.

Dolfish is the recording moniker for the Cleveland-based indie folk singer-songwriter Max Sollisch. His debut album , I'd Rather Disappear Than Stay The Same was released this week on vinyl through Afternoon Records (Pomegranates, Yellow Ostrich) and is also available as a pay-what-you-want digital download. His humorous yet heartfelt ruminations on life and love are bolstered by his distinct voice (that has traces of Daniel Johnston's) and the full band arrangements and production provided by label-mate Patrick Tape Fleming of The [...]

It comfortably maintains the slightly warped promise and standards of earlier releases! Go ahead, side with the majors and say the internet killed the music industry. I dare you. Because in the 1980s and 1990s, when corporate music was all you could find, a person like Max Sollisch would disappear completely-due to his inability to be the same as everyone else. So let us be grateful. Dolfish, Sollisch's nom-de-music, is about as unique a voice as you'll ever find. (That's right, she's a he....I can't believe this is a guy.) Incredible, powerful stuff.

Dolfish has the lo-fi kind of sound that gives folky tunes their country twang and substance. The title track off I'd Rather Disappear Than Stay The Same (out October 30 via the Afternoon label) has a unique tone to it created by Max Sollisch's Conor Oberst-esque vocals.
