With the upcoming release of her third full length album (titled When We Were Spies ) next month on March 11th, Canadian Ann Vriend is trying to break into the public's eye. Her previous work has been hailed internationally but acclaim has been less forthcoming here in North America. She's hoping to change that with this release, and in fact one of the songs from the album and the first single, St. Paul (listen to it below), has already drawn praise and play north of the border. My first impression upon [...]

In what will probably be another blow to SXSW's headliner list, Dolly Parton has announced that she is postponing her tour scheduled to start on February 28th in Minneapolis. Parton will be rescheduling her dates in April and May, which would preclude her appearance at SXSW this year, though that has not been specifically stated. On her web site , Dolly attributes the postponement due to a back condition "hey, you try wagging these puppies around a while and see if you don't have back problems". That means the Saturday night slot at the Austin Music Hall will be [...]
I just started a new job, full time. So between this zine and the job, I have very little time to watch Lost and movies. Fortunately I can listen to my ipod at my job so I can review music. Unfortunately, my amount of posting will suffer I fear. But to celebrate my new job, here are 5 songs about work, in no particular style or rank. Devo - Workin in a Coalmine This track is here simply for comedic value as Devo does the silliest cover songs. [...]

[There are 21 MP3s contained in this post] Call me crazy, but in 2005, I compiled a bunch of whacked out tunes for my WFMU marathon premium. Back then, the disc, Loony Tunes , was given out exclusively to pledgers to my show Give the Drummer Some , but now, invoking the insanity clause, I'm making the whole shebang available here. Posted below are the original liner notes, MP3s of (most of) the tracks, and quotes uttered by each manic maestro. Go nuts! [...]
Well its Monday night and in my pathetic state I'm sitting here listening to the Vengaboys remixed while sipping on a drink that's too girly for my stubble.. and I gotta say I'm having a damned good time. Let's face it, we all have some guilty pleasures and a couple skeletons in the closet, whether or not we have the huevos to admit it... Well we do, and here's what's banging tonight. Color Me Badd - I Wanna Sex You Up ( direct ) ( zShare ) [...]

Dolly Parton is an angel on this earth, and Down From Dover is on the All-Star team for songs that make me cry. I figured Thursday is a good day to post it, because you're probably feeling good that it's almost the weekend. That gives me tomorrow to help you get over having listened to it. I'll try to pick something good. I believe this was first released on her 1969 album The Fairest Of Them All , but I have it on a great 2-disc compilation. I can't seem to find any CD currently released [...]

Here's a joke that was all the rage with 10-, 11-, and 12-year-olds back in the late '70s: What do you call the sweat between DOLLY PARTON 's breasts? (beat) Mountain Dew. I'm telling you, back in the day, that killed . (Also: the one that starts, "So Jesus was being crucified at the top of this big hill" and ends, "Peter, I can see your house from here!" Classic.) JV and I have decided to run our Country Christmas posts over the next couple weekends. I will kick if off. He will follow up later, after the UVA/Va Tech game. Lucky bastard. We both realize we have a LOT of country christmas tunes, so these posts should be large. I have JV and our buddy Jake to thank for my current love of/appreciation for good country music. The original rhinestone cowboy and undisputed king of the Grand Ole Opry, Mr. Porter Wagoner, passed from this life yesterday at the age of 80 after losing his battle with lung cancer. Born to a farming family in southwestern Missouri, Wagoner was driven by his love of bluegrass music and formed his first band, The Blue Ridge Boys, while he worked in a butcher shop in the late 40's. After

MP3: Dolly Parton - "9 to 53 (Gnooly's Workin Remix)

It has been a decidedly un-rock weekend in the northern lonesome HQ - have been busy decorating, looking at walls and thinking about houses and homes. Home is quite a complicated concept, isn't it? Neither Howard nor I live in the place we grew up in, but we both refer to it as 'home'. In fact, the image in our title bar is of the fair town itself. I'm not sure where home stops and starts. I'm pretty sure that it has more to do with where the heart is than laying down hats though. [...]
